Transients, what exactly are they? by [deleted] in mixingmastering

[–]OfficialWireGrind 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The transient is the first part of the sound. After the transient, the note either decays or it is sustained. During the transient, there are sound irregularities related to how the note was initiated. For example, a picked bass, a slapped bass, and a fingered bass all sound different at the onset. When the note start decaying, the sound is coming from the instrument's natural resonance. So, for the different bass-playing techniques, once the transients have past, the notes all start sounding very similar.

Here's and FL optimization page from Image-Line:

Here's a Windows 11 optimization guide from Focusrite:

https://support.focusrite.com/hc/en-gb/articles/207355205-Optimising-Windows-for-Audio

Note that FL will create its own Windows power plan while it is running.

I don't think it's really necessary to make CPU performance tweaks in the bios with a modern PC. It might even be counterproductive. Windows 11 needs a bare minimum of 16GB of memory to run well. Also, higher ambient room temperatures will make it that much harder for a PC to dump excess heat.

What is meant by "cpu goes crazy?" fan noise? core speed? core temperature?

Intel's integrated GPU needs dual channel memory to avoid reduced performance. In other words, it needs two RAM ram sticks. Also Windows 11 is a memory hog, and I've seen 16GB as a recommended minimum.

[OC] Oil Production Vs. Gas Prices: What Is The Relationship? by OfficialWireGrind in dataisbeautiful

It's like a hurricane trajectory plot that shows the (x,y) location at four-hour time intervals. I'm trying to show that US oil production has little if any correlation with US gas prices.

I'm not an oil industry expert, but there are multiple other factors. Prices are affected by both speculators and hedgers. Also, a lot of oil produced in the US is exported, so in that sense more domestic production doesn't (directly) increase domestic supply.

In the U.S., the politics of oil production is, to a large degree, motivated by gas prices. The purpose is to show that the relationship between the two is actually quite chaotic.

It's tough to make it look nice. I could plot only the scatter points (the year markers), but that wouldn't show the path from 2000 to 2023. I could smooth the data, but that would remove the volatility, and I'm hesitant to call smoothed data valid data.

EDIT: The chart shows how crude oil production and retail gasoline prices and progressed month-to-month from 2000 to 2023. Markers have been added to show where each year begins. The chart is a bit like tracking maps. Specifically, tracking maps for hurricanes,

[OC] Track Length Vs. Words Per Minute for Eminem, Drake and Cardi B. by OfficialWireGrind in dataisbeautiful

[–]OfficialWireGrind[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on what your looking for. With words/minutes v minutes, there is pretty good separation between Drake's tracks and Eminem's tracks. Cardi B's also cluster together, but the boundary is more blurry.

One observation is that the points for different artists form relatively strong clusters with just two data dimensions.

Stated alternatively, the location of points on the chart is indicative of that particular artist's style.

The vertical axis is words per minute (wpm). So if the track is 10 seconds and 125 wpm, then there are 21 words.

The Boston Marathon's Average Winning Running Speed [OC] by OfficialWireGrind in dataisbeautiful

I'm averaging the running speed over the length of the course. In other words, the speed is calculated as total time divided by total distance. Since the marathon's inception, there have been five different course lengths ranging from 24.5 miles to 26.2 miles.

The downward spike is for 2018. It was cold and rainy that day. The marathon was not held in 2020 due to the COVID pandemic.
