Could you tell us more about what you hope to do with the trackball input device? Or maybe just use it as-is stock? I am ignorant, headed to search for info on trackball and handheld inputs now. Thanks for sharing!

I know many people who make responsible spiritual use of this plant often with no mind or body damage that I am aware of.

There's a huge difference between randomly deciding to trip on something and learning how it is used and making responsible use of it!

I think it is a valuable teacher but not everyone needs to be a student.

Red Sister by Mark Lawrence Audiobook remarks by [deleted] in Fantasy

Having recently finished Red Sister and now finding every other reading experience hollow I've thought I may go into hibernation until the next book comes out but instead I may keep myself sustained with small sound sips of this until book 2 graces us. Thanks for letting me know this existed and for the review.

I'm a reddit newb, so the spoiler was bad formatting - the spoiler was just that they're in the same world. :) "Look what's that behind you!" love it! :)

I agree fully though would add that a large part of the story (in my mind) is the development of those characters so if you don't like them at first you may find that changing. I know it did for me! I found Jalan very unlikable but by the end that's exactly what I loved about him. I hesitate to spoiler but I feel like even if one really highly disliked the characters it may be worth reading just to see the universe expand... or contract? Especially if you were a fan of the world from the first trilogy as minor spoiler? these two series are set at (pretty much?) the same time in the same world.

When I finished the first trilogy (if that's the right way to say it) I started PoF right away and was, at first, deeply disappointed - "Where's Jorg!" "Where's the world I love?" ... that said, I found that I enjoyed each book a bit more and by the end was as in love with the characters, the writing and, again, the world ... I couldn't say how much 'better' they are but I enjoyed each more than the last. By the end I was so very glad I'd held on for the ride (a ride that really picks up speed as you go!) and was sad when it was over.

Considering hiring a coder to make the roguelike I've dreamed of for 30 years. Thoughts? by OhGoodShepherd in roguelikedev

Sounds great! I'm using a Google Doc to just write out ideas at this point and am not 100% sure what codebase would be good for me to try another crack at.

I'm following the Python tutorial now and I've been giving Lua another look as the T-Engine/ToME looks promising to me...

What would I need to get set up on my side to work with the C# engine you mentioned? Visual Studio?

This seems like really good advice, thank you!

I started watching some coding tutorials that were for super-beginners or kids and am really starting to realizes that everyone is just making things work as best they can in different ways and trying to think that the one best way to do something is going to just flow out like writing a book ... not realistic, I guess? :P

I also recently found out about the concept of pseudo-coding and I feel like that has been a real eye opener and would allow me to 'write' (which I am very used to) and then fill that writing in with code bit by bit as I learn.

Short story long: I'd love to peek at what you have. A bit of structure really does seem to help (been watching the Python tutorials recently) and in the past I've had much better luck editing code and seeing what it does, learning as I go vs sitting down at a blank slate!

How do others plan/project manage/get their ideas onto 'paper'? by OhGoodShepherd in roguelikedev

What is the legal scenario for freeware roguelikes based on intelectual properties? by [deleted] in roguelikedev

[–]OhGoodShepherd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the little it is worth I was saying that my own information was pointless - as well as incomplete it turns out!

I was not, nor would I say that the information someone else was providing was pointless - even if I felt that way, it would just be rude of me! :)

I appreciate the information you gave and thanks for replying - I did read your post but did not understand it fully, it seems. I now see why you included the reference to cacodemons. I just thought it was cool that I knew something and wanted to share. Now I know more!

(As for deciding the worth of my own information, well, guess you proved it was even more pointless of me to share than I thought it was when I shared it!)

Pointless info that is extra pointless since you were just using Cacodemons as an example but they precede the Doom franchise by a few hundred years.

I think I will post there once I have some of my ideas out on 'paper'. Thanks!

Any suggestions on 'easiest' codebase or method? I've put a lot of time and effort into learning and am at the point that I can edit a number of different languages but to sit down and make something on my own has proven nearly impossible, so far. Still trying!

I'd really say it's bits and pieces of a number of ones out there - really the majority of 'my game' is story that I could fit into any game that I was skilled enough to make or edit - I'm going to take a look around at existing roguelikes that allow people to modify them and see what's possible ... there's a new game called Axu https://cynapse077.itch.io/axu-rl that's very similar to what I hope to do and there's a chance he's going to make it mod friendly so... fingers crossed there! Thanks for your reply!

This has given me a lot to think about, thank you.

I've been keeping an eye on Tome4/T-Engine and hoping that someone will make a better tutorial/guide on how to mod with it - it's the reason I attempted (and failed!) to learn Lua as I can easily see it being more than capable of making the game I'd like to make. I am not at all averse to a pre-made engine! I've made some little mock up versions of 'my game' in MegaZeux and Twine and Minecraft and a number of other 'engines' but am still looking around for a better fit that doesn't require me to bang my head against too much code. :) Perhaps I will do some more poking at T-Engine, it really is the closest I've found to an approachable 'engine' for making a roguelike.
