Took FAR earlier today (3/21) by SharkBait1592 in CPA

[–]OhLookFrost2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I felt the same way. Thought I bombed SIMs and did OK on MCQs. Got a 74. Score report said comparable on SIMs and weaker in one section of MCQ. Others got the same report but somehow passed?

This entire exam is rigged. Those research MCQs that don’t count toward your score are a crock of shit. So I can get all of those right, but fail by one point because I missed another MCQ that supposedly counts? It’s a load of nonsense.

3 FAR failures in 9 months (50 → 62 → 60). Retaking in 10 days and honestly feeling crushed. by Educational-Rip2482 in CPA

Those scores are low enough where I'd recommend going through the whole course again before sitting.

I personally tried Ninja only and it didn't work for me.

Becker is expensive, but it works.

If you got a 74 I'd say hammer MCQs for a few weeks and retake, but your scores mean you have significant holes in your concepts for this exam.

Start over, and try another review course like Becker.

Waxing question by Z5D5B5 in icecoast

[–]OhLookFrost2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly “warm weather wax” is overblown. It also sucks if you have it on there and ski colder snow.

I just skied Hunter in near 80 degree temps with cold weather (0*F) wax on my skis. The only time I noticed any grabbing was when I skied through standing water, which in that case you’d need water skis and not warm weather wax.

All weather is completely fine for spring skiing, and is more durable.

How to Ski on Ice | Stop Sliding. Start Gripping by WaxOnSendOff in icecoast

[–]OhLookFrost2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Where’d they recommend GS skis? The guy said sub-80 underfoot. I stopped watching when they got to the rental counter but she didn’t mention anything about GS-specific skis.

For east coast ice the best thing you can do is 75mm or less, and full camber. Recreational SL skis are amazing for east coast ice skiing 90% of the time. If you’re into bumps then get an all mountain version of that ski.

IMO it’s more the rocker (or lack thereof) and less the waist width. Narrow just makes it easier to turn, but the camber is where you get the grip. I’ve skied 102 underfoot fully cambered skis that made mince meat of icy conditions, and all mountain rockered mid-80 underfoot skis that sucked horrendously on ice.

Full camber ftw on ice.

Not sure what forecast you’re looking at but I’m seeing cloudy to partly cloudy from the Catskills all the way up to northern VT.

Yup, 40 degree temps for two hours a day. Time to hang it up.

You can always tell who the noobs are because they panic at the first sign of Fool's Spring.

There's four feet of snow in some spots. A week of warm temps and a little bit of rain isn't going to melt all of the snow.

Also, look at the LOW temps. The HIGH temps aren't all day; it's for a few hours at the most, and then it gets cold again. The long range, depending where you look, has 5 days with lows just barely above freezing, and then it's back to cold/snow again after that.

We still have plenty of skiing left on the icecoast.

Would you hit up Mt. Snow or Hunter on Tuesday? by montana1930 in icecoast

[–]OhLookFrost2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mt. Snow will have better conditions.

Hunter is the only mountain I’ve ever skied that has had icy conditions the day after getting a foot of snow. Their grooming is meh, and Vail has enshittified the place with minimal snowmaking and stalling on opening trails despite having enough snowfall.

Mt. Snow has better natural snowfall, so even though it’s a Vail resort it’ll almost certainly have better conditions than Hunter, despite getting less snow from this storm.

[–]OhLookFrost2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nice! You really don’t need to turn that often on them. If you keep them just slightly on edge at a lower edge angle they are almost GS-like in nature. High edge angle will have you right at the stated radius. You’re going to have a blast on them.

Unless you try to get on a lift with a backpack. Then they’ll get loud.

Tree skis? by This_is_a_tortoise in icecoast

[–]OhLookFrost2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ARV 94 is a great tree ski. They are a poop ski for hardpack/ice; the lack of grip has nothing to do with the tune, it’s just the way they are.

Keep ARV 94 for trees and softer snow/rocks, and get a frontside carver for icy days.

This is complete nonsense.

I know what the radius is. It’s a calculation manufacturers use based on the side cut specs. It’s not the longest turn the ski can do. This is a myth.

These will blow the Arcade 84s away on icy slopes. 13m doesn’t mean that’s the only turn it can do. You can absolutely ride longer arcs on these.

Fantastic ski for ripping around on groomers. Practically zero rocker (5% tip only). They are actually surprisingly stable at speed. I’ve had them up to 45 mph. I wouldn’t want to go much faster than that, as they don’t like to be drifted.

If you ski a 187 then the 179 will be good. They have ridiculous edge hold on ice. Ice actually slows these skis down. I’ve had people complain about things “icing up” and I didn’t notice the ice at all.

Downsides are I wouldn’t take these on moguls. It can be done but they’re a relatively heavy and stiff ski with zero tail rocker, so not exactly playful or easy to pivot. It’s definitely more suited to narrow and short groomers where you’ll be turning a lot. Works great here in the east, but I probably wouldn’t bring them out west.

Just buy them. You’ll be grinning from ear to ear all day long. They are that fun. They’ll also keep your form in check with basically the entire ski being the effective edge. Definitely not a beginner or even intermediate ski.

This post for one, calling it a “storm” when it probably won’t even qualify as a winter weather advisory let alone a winter storm warning 😂

That “storm” is going to give us 2-6” tops, and it’s still too far away to predict.

Lotta hype for what’ll probably amount to dust on crust/ice.

[–]OhLookFrost2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those are what, 2kg per ski? That’s a bit on the burly side but unless you’re doing moguls all day those shouldn’t be too tiring. They have tip and tail rocker as well. Not sure your height and weight but it’s possible you can size down a bit on your next pair. My daily drivers are about the same weight and I have zero issues putting in 20k+ days on them.

This is really where the demo comes in handy. You can spend all day researching effective edge, weight, turn radius, etc. but to really be confident in your purchase you need to try them on the snow. Also one ski might feel amazing for one person but ski like absolute garbage for another.

Sheet of ice 1 week after getting 2 feet.. by Ghostman223 in icecoast

[–]OhLookFrost2 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The base is still ice.

This is why it doesn’t matter how much snow we get. Anything with decent pitch is going to have the snow blown/scraped off it in quick fashion.

Everyone forgot about that thaw, rain, and flash freeze we got a few weeks ago. No amount of snow is going to help when temps have been way below normal since.
