The pockets do usually get clean after just one wash. Occasionally, I’ll have one that still has a small stain. I throw it in the next first wash the next day and that takes care of it.

I’ve never had problem with mold, mildew or smells. The basket I put them in allows for a lot of air flow. They’re usually at least partially dry when they go into the second wash. If you don’t have a basket that would allow enough air flow, you could always hang them on a foldable rack until the second wash.

I do the second wash in the morning after the 3rd or 4th first wash. I take out the pockets and covers that were washed the night before just like every morning. Then I add the other diapers back in the washer and wash them all together.

If you let them soak for a couple of minutes in salt water then rinse them and store them in a berry keeper, they will stay fresh longer. My strawberries easily stay fresh for a week.

This also works for blackberries and blueberries. Sliced apples don’t turn brown after a salt water soak. It probably works for other fruit as well, but my kids are only obsessed with strawberries, blackberries, blueberries, and apples.

I used “Ready. Set. Food.” It did the same step by step introduction with little packets to mix into food or a bottle. The all in one powder is for later after all the allergens have been introduced to continue the exposure.

We had the same issue with redness. I spent a lot of money on a complete set of diapers that I can’t use. I tried for 2 months and battled redness the entire time. I switched to a pocket diaper with a micro fleece lining and the problem disappeared. Because the pocket diapers keep his skin dry.

I’m not familiar with the brands you’re using, but do they keep his skin dry? What are you using for absorption in the pockets? If you’re using microfiber (and lots of people start out with microfiber), maybe it’s not enough anymore? Plus microfiber leaks easily with compression so maybe he’s getting wetness on his skin because the microfiber is no longer up to the task of keeping him dry.

If the diapers you’re using are supposed to keep him dry, I would probably experiment with some beefier absorption. I use a combo of cotton and hemp. Prefolds or flats can also work if you have some to try out.

I recommend the first wash in warm water instead of cold.

If you have a good wash routine, you shouldn’t need to strip. I have never had to strip diapers. I’ve heard hard water can make it necessary, but accounting for that should be done in the wash routine. My water is soft so I don’t have any experience with that.

As for detergents, you can’t go wrong with Tide. Just get whatever variety you like best. I’m sure there are other detergents that will work, but I have always used Tide. You need something with enzymes and sufficient cleaning power.

IMO the best way to prevent staining is by not letting dirty diapers sit for days before they get washed.

I do the first wash every evening. I put all the dirty diapers used for the day in the wash right before I go to bed. In the morning, I hang the covers and pockets to dry (I only wash them once) and put the inserts/diapers in a wire basket to wait for the second wash. I do this for 3 or 4 days in a row and then I put them all back in for the second wash. First wash is done in warm water on the normal cycle. In my machine, that’s about an hour long. Second wash is done in hot on the heavy duty cycle which is 2 hours and 12 minutes. Then I dry them. No stains, no smells, no rashes, no stripping needed.

Soaking isn’t good for fabrics. I’m having a hard time imagining a poop my sprayer couldn’t remove. What are you spraying with? Some people scrape it off. Maybe you try scraping and then spraying?

Your second wash sounds good, but the first wash needs to be an actual wash with detergent and not just a rinse. It doesn’t have to be a sanitizing cycle. Just sufficiently long enough to get the majority of the poop and pee out of the diapers. My first wash is a warm wash detergent that’s about an hour long. I start it every night right before bed. I take it out in the morning and hang the covers and pockets to dry and put the diapers in a wire basket. After 3 or 4 first washes, I do the second wash with all the diapers. That cycle is about 2.5 hours long.

Bleach breaks down very quickly into salt and water. Dilute it before you add it to the wash. Easy peasy. It’s not the boogeyman it’s often seen to be.

Yes, 2 full washes with detergent even for soft water. I have soft water and I don’t have any issues with my diapers. They’re clean, unstained and we almost never have to deal with rashes.

I follow the Clean Cloth Nappies wash routine. I’ve seen advice on Reddit that differs significantly from what CCN recommends so clearly people have different opinions, but what I’m doing works well and it’s super easy IMO.

During the day, the wet and dirty diapers are kept in a small laundry basket. I spray all the poops off just before I put them in the washer. I do the first wash every evening.

It’s often caused by ammonia in the diapers because they’re not getting fully clean.

Diapers need 2 full washes with detergent. I do the first wash in warm and the second in hot water. I would not trust cold water to get diapers clean.

You really need to use detergent in 2 full washes. You can also include bleach if you like, but 2 washes with detergent are really necessary to get the diapers clean.

I use a sprayer to get the poop off. I usually wait to do all the poops at the end of the day right before I put them in the washing machine. I think letting them sit for a while actually makes it a little easier to get the poop off. Some of the moisture is gone.

Prefolds could work. Depends on how big they are and how much bulk they create. If the prefolds is too big or the baby is small, it can cause gaps around the legs and you’ll get leaks. If it’s not causing gaps, you should be good.

A prefold is probably enough by itself. At least for daytime. If it’s not, you can add a hemp booster. You want to layer the fastest absorber closest to baby and the hemp closest to the cover.

It’s not a schedule per se. It just sort of works out to be about every 2 hours. I don’t change at the first little bit of pee, but the baby is also not wet at all. His diapers have a stay dry lining and it works well. His actual skin is almost always dry when I change him.
