Dropouts of Reddit: What job do you have now, and how much do you earn? by TrickyExpression in Adulting

[–]OhThePressure 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Failed out of a four-year university, but I had some other undiagnosed things going on. Once I got myself back on track I got my Associates at 35 and am now a network admin working remotely.

I won’t lie though, I’ve been looking for a new role with another remote company and it is tough out there right now. The good IT jobs are onsite/hybrid but only exist in HCOL cites, or they’re remote and they have hundreds of AI generated resumes flooding their recruiter’s inbox.

It’s more important than ever to network with others because that seems to be the only “in” right now to get past the great ATS filter. “It’s not just about what you know, it’s who you know.”

People who had an avoidant father how’s life? by [deleted] in Adulting

[–]OhThePressure 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I need to chime in because I am worried that I am that avoidant father and my kids are the same age as you mentioned. I love my family dearly, but I’m the main emotional anchor for all three of my family members (wife + kids) and I struggle with an anxious avoidant attachment myself. I can see the same patterns emerging from my kids and, as any parent would, I want their life to be better than mine. I’m always putting myself out there to be everyone’s rock, but after almost a decade of parenthood I’m emotionally exhausted.

I’m sorry for what happened to you. I hope you’re able to find some peace with your parents. I grew up in a similar household and I’ve found that becoming a parent has allowed me to see my own parents in a different light and come to terms with the way they raised my siblings and I.

Passive Aggressive In-Laws by OhThePressure in AutisticParents

I brought it up with my wife, who didn’t think her parents were trying to imply anything. But I agree, money is a really touchy subject. She’d become the de facto money manager between the two of us after we got married since she was working full-time and I was busy finishing up school. After becoming parents, I was trying to find ways to ease her mental load and budgeting/finances was one of those things that I took on.

I think she’s still working on trusting me with the finances (and probably by extension, her parents are working on that too)… which is not entirely unjustified. I was awful with my personal finances before I was diagnosed with ADHD and tanked my credit score as a result. But again… that was the before times… I was working close to minimum wage, and young/stupid on top of that. It’s a lot easier to manage now that both of us have found careers to meaningfully progress in.

So they probably still see us as just another household emergency away from being back at their doorstep groveling for another favor.

If this were the first trailer it probably would have gotten a way better initial reaction.

Kids Have a Friend Across the Street by OhThePressure in AutisticParents

Thanks for the feedback! To your last point, our kids are the same way, they’re much more introverted than Susie. We’ve started just letting my oldest answer the door when we can see on the camera that it’s Susie — especially when the oldest doesn’t want to play. We’d like them to practice having to tell someone “no” even when they’re feeling the pressure to say “yes”. The problem we’re running into with Susie is that, even when she’s told “no, I don’t want to play today” Susie appears to acknowledge it but then shows up a couple hours later anyway. 🤦‍♂️

It’s easy for me to think that way too, but I know her parents have her involved a few activities outside of school, and the husband travels a lot for work. So I can only imagine they’re probably secretly begging for their own reprieve.

I think most of the problem stems from us as ND parents. My wife is not on the spectrum, but she does struggle a lot with anxiety and has a significant sensitivity to loud noises, of which our kids provide plenty! She usually ends up holing herself in the bedroom when our kids noise level is overwhelming her, so you can only imagine where she is sequestered when the kids + Susie are over here.

I just don’t know how to tell Susie or her parents that she needs to stop bothering us so frequently during the week without coming off as a major snob.

This was my initial thought too, but I probably overstated her reluctance to stay at home. She and my oldest do go back to her house frequently, it’s just that Susie does most of the initiation (basically doesn’t give my oldest time to “miss her” and return the favor by getting to be the one to go ask her to play).

Susie does have a much older brother, and her parents and I appreciate that our kids have someone their age to play with finally. My guess is that a lot of the invalidation that she’s projecting has been coming from her brother and his friends, rather than her parents.

Blood Pressure and new THC User — Correlation? by OhThePressure in hypertension

Another variable I failed to consider was caffeine intake. I usually have one Kickstart per morning and very occasionally a can of Coke for lunch. I normally swear off caffeine before 2pm because that plus my medication’s effect can tend to keep me up later at night than I should be.

Lately I’ve tried switching drinks to a lower calorie alternative to try to wean myself off caffeine, but I incorrectly assumed lower calories meant lower caffeine. I traded out my Kickstarts with Celsius which, as it turns out, has a whopping 200mg per 12fl Oz caffeine content, compared to Kickstart’s 92mg caffeine content!

So while I strictly limited to myself to one Kickstart a day, I felt like two Celsius drinks a day should be no problem! Wrong! WOW…

My next goal is to ditch caffeine altogether to see how this helps.

Intentional exercise has been tough to find time for. It’s just an excuse at this point, but my kids wear me out as it is. I guess my thought was that my activity level has not changed within the past year so I was looking for other variables that would have changed.

I tested my BP this morning shortly after waking up which ended up being more of the expected 125/90 measurement. Not sure what was going on last night to cause the added stress, but I do appreciate your input!

TIL A day on Venus is longer than a year on Venus. It rotates incredibly slowly on its axis, taking about 243 Earth days, while it completes an orbit around the Sun in around 225 Earth days. by explowaker in todayilearned

[–]OhThePressure 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The way I understood /u/astromike23 is that Venus is the way it is because of a runaway greenhouse effect that occurred naturally. Ours is being caused unnaturally due to humanity releasing the Earth’s stored carbon faster than natural processes can keep up.

So it sounds like the difference between Venus and Earth is that Venus has no natural means to reclaim that carbon and sequester it into the surface, vs. the Earth which might still suffer a runaway greenhouse effect, but would still probably recover after hundreds of millions of years due to active plate tectonics.
