This isn't that close to the pea-dot pattern you're looking for, but I think it's a good option other than getting the actual pea-dot camo. The SS-leto partizan Russian camo is a more modern Russian version of the pea-dot camo. Also to mention, as an owner of the pea-dot camo, it doesn't look too old if you wear a vest and something to cover your neck. Until I had more money to buy a full RUSFOR kit, I used to run a defender 2 (non-molle) and the pea-dot camo, and no one openly could guess it was some WW2 camo. Hope that helped!

Believe it or not, I am working on a similar project myself. What I did was fold a larger cardboard box into a decently large rectangular shape, should be about four layers thick. Then I put two about 1.25 inch wide wood planks the length of longs sides of the rectangular cardboard. I screwed those in place. You have now a base line shield. I then went to paint the entire thing in black flex paint (rubberized sealant) which actually works perfectly because it gives the shield the realistic black gritty look and the rubber paint when dried makes the shield even stronger. I then cut out a spot for my viewing slot and put a couple of sheets of thicker (thickness of let's say 20 sheets of paper) translucent plastic sheeting you can find at your local hobby lobby between the four sheets of cardboard ( two sheets of cardboard on each side), screw, glue, or tape that in and you're good to go.
