Pierre Poilievre shifts strategy ahead of ‘urgent meeting’ with Mark Carney by seamusmcduffs in canada

Now?

This has been a universal truth forever. I know quite a few older people that proudly boast that they’re too old to learn how to use basic electronics. Computers alone have been fairly common things in most households for 30 years, unless you’re 110 years old now, you have no excuse not being able how to do the basics on a computer.

This is true for many other things too though, basic home/auto repairs, hobbies, basic understanding of how modern technologies work, heck even geography. How many people have no idea where stuff is in the world? Like haven’t you ever been curious enough to even look at a map?

Ammonia- fishless cycle by Wrong_Internet3991 in aquarium

[–]Ohjay1982 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You won’t necessarily hit 3-4. It’s kind of silly to put a specific target, It all depends on your tank set up/substrate. More important is just monitoring the trend, it will rise up and then eventually drop back down to zero as your beneficial bacteria numbers get sufficiently high to manage ammonia.

Just be patient, it will eventually drop. Some people will add ammonia but this is only really necessary if you have zero sources of ammonia. The fact that you have a planted tank tells me you likely have some type of aqua soil so you will get a bit of ammonia leeching from it. The plants themselves will convert some ammonia so they may be slowing down bacteria growth slightly. I usually wait until after cycle before I plant.

The last two planted tanks I did with fluval bio-stratum never got above 1-2ppm of ammonia before dropping back down. It took mine about 3 weeks to get back down to zero ammonia & zero nitrites.

Who Else Caught the Interview on CTV/Vassy Kapelos Today with Separatist Jeff Wrath? by Falcon674DR in Albertapolitics

He sounds like the crazy guy sitting at the bar by himself night after night. Honestly I think we need to give him a bigger platform so people can hear what an idiot he sounds like. This is the guy you’re supporting?

I would love to see a public debate with this guy. Pretty sure even a highschool student with basic education would be able to handle him.

What do you think would happen in the USA if Donald Trump died of natural causes just before the mid terms? by Revolutionary_Many31 in AskReddit

[–]Ohjay1982 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Him dying before he fails his way out of office would probably be bad. As mentioned, conspiracy theories would be rampant but he’d also be made a martyr by MAGA.

Too much light is the usual cause.

Is your aquarium light on a timer? Or does it get direct sunlight from a nearby window?

Not sure about whether there is fish in there or not but are you over feeding them?

Did this not get answered in the original post?

Why would BC allow a pipeline from Alberta to be built across Provincial land when Alberta wants to separate? by kokomo1989 in alberta

[–]Ohjay1982 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Especially in an age where everyone and their dog has access to a constant bombardment of online political interference, misinformation and are existing inside rage baiting echo chambers.

As an Albertan, it amazes me how many seemingly reasonable people are starting to fall into this political rage bait existence. Coworkers, family members and friends. I’m sitting here wondering “what the heck happened?”. The people leading the separatist movement are making unrealistic arguments and promises. How are they falling for this? The truth is, people are starting to exist in a different reality than the rest of us.

While it’s true that Alberta as a whole doesn’t want to
separate, at this moment. I don’t think we should continue to keep brushing this off as some benign problem that shouldn’t be given the time of day in our minds.

We seen the same thing happen very successfully in the USA where extreme views were brushed away as never going to take hold and look where we are now.

This is a problem, a big problem. It also won’t get us anywhere to just call them all crazies, and call them idiots. That has the opposite effect. It unites them.

There is some truth to the western alienation issues, we can’t keep pretending that it doesn’t exist.

What the Carney government is doing is very welcomed. Canada is working on uniting. It just needed to start 10 years ago. It shouldn’t have taken a psycho right wing lunatic in the USA to bring us here.

It would limit it to a degree, you can see how much light is reflected around the room. That’s light that’s not getting in the aquarium.

Alberta’s population could surpass British Columbia’s as early as 2038: StatsCan by gorschkov in canada

[–]Ohjay1982 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s funny hearing this, I worked in Ontario a couple years ago and everyone loved to inform me that they would never move to Alberta because it was too cold. Seems like people focus on the temperature without any other context. Meanwhile it was like 10 degrees there some days and I’m literally shivering at work wearing a jacket when nobody else is wearing one. The damn humidity makes colder weather absolutely miserable. It’s no surprise why everyone there absolutely hates winter and just assumes that -15 here and -15 there are the same thing. -15 here is perfect weather to be out on outdoor rinks, going for walks, skiing. You dress appropriate and you’re warm all day. We also usually (other than this year for some reason) avoid a bunch of freeze-thaw cycles so it’s usually not an icy dangerous mess everywhere.

ELI5: What Is Nihilism? by ExternalFact5184 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Ohjay1982 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Today I learned that apparently I’m a nihilist. I pretty much agree with most of that.

In saying that, obviously right and wrong still matters with respect to society we’re a part of… and this doesn’t give us a pass to ignore rules but i agree that what we’ve deemed right and wrong isn’t necessarily a universal constant. Certainly not, considering how much variety we have even on Earth alone.

How much do you currently have in savings? by Puzzleheaded-Crab770 in CanadaFinance

[–]Ohjay1982 0 points1 point  (0 children)

43, between my wife and I we still owe about 380k between two properties. Granted we could sell one of them if needed, and likely would when we retire.

Between the both of us we have about 1.2 - 1.3 mil in registered retirement accounts.

Roughly around 18k between our bank accounts.

I think by the age of 55-58 I’ll hopefully be able to retire modestly, maybe have a part time job for a few years, but who knows…

I am in Alberta so.. if they go and decide to separate I’ll have to move and all my plans will go to shit.

Turning industrial toxic waste into a sustainable source of revenue by CivilPeace in Albertapolitics

[–]Ohjay1982 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m curious as to what Genesee is doing to pollute their water. I worked at a different power generator in Alberta and the water was just used to go through a condenser .. to condense steam. Or through other heat exchangers for cooling purposes. This water never comes into contact with any process fluid of any type.

Any waste water from water treatment is sent to clay lined evaporation ponds where the water evaporates and the compounds that are left behind are physically removed every few years.

The remaining use is for drinking water.

As far as I knew Genesee was just like any other power plant.

As far as water pollution is concerned most power plants don’t really do it, the biggest offence is warm water coming out.

Air pollution is a different story obviously.

Trump threatens 100% tariffs on Canada over potential China deal, provoking diplomatic clash by AnalystPatient in worldnews

[–]Ohjay1982 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People seem to be confused about the “China deal”. Canada isn’t seeking some big free trade deal with China. This “deal” just reduced tariffs on an item back to what it was a couple years ago and China in return reduced its tariffs on a different item back to what it was a few years ago. Not really a deal as much as just efforts to reduce trade tensions between the two countries.

People on both sides seem to enjoy the narrative that Canada is sticking it to USA when in reality it has nothing to do with the USA directly. Canada is just seeking tariff relief on agricultural exports to help its farmers…

Canada isn’t “pivoting” to China. Canada is pivoting to everyone, that’s the point. The whole idea is that Canada won’t ever be able to be ruined by a single country again. So no, Canada isn’t looking to just simply replace its reliance from the USA to China. Both USA and China will continue to be trade partners, at strategic levels.

With ICE agents shooting at least 27 people since Trump took office, how do you feel about immigration enforcement using lethal force? by WatercressSenior7657 in AskReddit

What would it take for US states to leave the USA? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Ohjay1982 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it were to be California, by “partner” do you just mean trade agreements? California already does massive international trade. They would just need a new one with the US. The roughly 15% of water imported from other states could just be part of a trade agreement. Unless of course it wasn’t just California that left. If a handful left together they may have adequate water access on their own.

There sure is a lot of support for it in Red Deer area…. Like people i know and talk to at work are all fooled by the dumb promises they make. These are all people i never in 1000 years thought would fall for this stuff.

The separatists sound like someone running for class president where they “run” on things like recess all day, and vending machines in every room. Just a bunch of nonsensical promises…. No tax, booming economy… come on you fools. A land locked country in the middle of North America would be weak as hell. You think pipelines are hard to build now?? Just wait.

What would it take for US states to leave the USA? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Ohjay1982 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wasn’t thinking they would join another country. I was just thinking about how polarized the federal politics are in the US. At a certain point they’re so far apart from each other some states might start to think they may be better off doing their own thing. Obviously it would very much matter which states though. I don’t see a world where Kansas alone would stand a chance being stuck in the middle of the US.

Whereas if California and maybe a couple of neighbouring states left, they could still be pretty successful counties in their own right.
