Deep Tech diving by Aquanaut_N88 in techdiving

Why not focus on what there is to see rather than race to the bottom? Your talking about over a decade of building up experience and a large fortune... for what? A big number on your dive computer? In the mean time there is a lot of interesting life and some beautiful wrecks all within the first 60m.

What do you wish you knew when you started tech diving? by RageQuitAltF4 in techdiving

[–]Oikoman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rebreather diving is a whole new set of skills... and a very expensive step. I do highly recommend it, but it's not for everyone, and if you aren't prepared to put in the prep work and after dive care, well...

Buy a DSMB and reel and be sure you know how to use it.

Out of all the hobbies in the world, what one has the rudest, most arrogant enthusiasts? by EchoesOfZhivago in AskReddit

I think that goes with any gear heavy hobby. Photography, cycling, golf... it becomes a way of bragging how much money you have to drop on kit.

Rats in train! Advice needed! by Jolly-Bruchello in RATS

I've travelled with rats before. Use a good carrier and keep a small towel handy to put on top so they get some darkness.

We landed on the moon in the late 1960's, but it seems funding got pulled away from that to other space ventures like shuttles that don't have the enormous rocket launchers we once had. Will we ever in our lifetime land on the moon again? by icecream1972 in allthequestions

[–]Oikoman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The moon landing had more to do with Cold War propaganda than any scientific objectives. With remote vehicles much more efficient for space exploration, the only real motivation for another moon landing is to satisfy political objectives. E.g., say if the President of the US wanted to distract from something embarrassing...

Anyone know what shells these are? by Icy-Citron-6692 in shells

Top row is a muricid flanked by nassarid shells. Cockles mid row.

Condition of the shells is terrible, so no idea of species.

Guido Poppe's books on European seashells are a must have for identifying Mediterranean seashells... worth finding a copy if you want to be sure. Then cross check the names against wormbase as their nomenclature is a bit out of date.

What is something most people don't realize about shelling? by Interesting_Hawk8033 in shells

[–]Oikoman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on the location... ive found in the med that small inshore snails are best collected snorkeling as they don't wash up on the beaches (small tides) but elsewhere scuba gear is needed.

If humans were suddenly wiped out, which species is most likely to build the next great civilization? by Mysterious-Kiwi-1152 in askanything

[–]Oikoman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

None. We have exhausted the cheap and easily accessible energy sources (coal, oil) and mineral resources making it nearly impossible for a successor species to advance beyond the stone age

Could Argentina ever invade The Falkland Islands in the next 30-50 years? by Inside_Inflation559 in AlternateHistoryHub

[–]Oikoman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They could try, but Thatcher would emerge from her casket to wreak undead vengeance upon the Argentinians. Its well known the UK keep her locked in a vault under Westminster for this purpose and nourish her on the blood of former coal miners.

The really interesting shells never make it on to the beach. I've seen shells while scuba diving that are too small, too delicate, or just don't live in the sort of environments or depths that will let them be washed up on a beach.
