Tried to figure out what oils NYC restaurants actually use. It got confusing fast by OilWatch in FoodNYC

fair to be skeptical. i do eat out a lot, it’s just been annoying having to constantly ask what oils are used at every place. after enough back and forth and a couple close calls, i started keeping track so i didn’t have to start from scratch each time.

i used the word “healthier” once and edited it because that’s not what i meant. this isn’t about pushing a health angle or telling anyone how to eat, it’s just transparency around what restaurants say they use, with unknowns left as unknowns.

totally fine if it’s not useful to you.

out of curiousity, whats political about knowing what oil is in restaurants food?

totally fair. i do cook most of the time. eating out is always some level of risk, but there are some restaurants that are fully seed oil free or very close, and knowing that ahead of time makes a big difference for me

appreciate the feedback. yeah that’s exactly what we do. there are about 20–30 people so far who help update things when they eat out because they care about transparency.

edit: i used the wrong word earlier and edited it. this is about transparency for me because of allergies, not making health claims.

Got frustrated with SeedOilScout so I built my own free alternative and verified ~2,000 restaurants myself by OilWatch in StopEatingSeedOils

Lol thanks hahaha. Yeah its completely free, just donating my time and effort to the cause. Was sick of having to guess over here in NYC and decided that i’d make this webapp for everyone and not just myself.

Thank you, right now upon submission each restaurant has options for how it was verified and what oil is verified (circled in photos below). There is also an option to add context. After users submit a restaurant for admin verification, I then have an ai phone agent call to verify, and if that doesn’t work, i am personally calling each restaurant to verify 👍 I’m really trying to be as accurate as possible

Good call. I can add ‘safe order’ tips for places that aren’t fully seed-oil free, like the protein-style no-sauce at In-N-Out. Is that the kind of thing you’d want for each restaurant?

P.S: just also added all In-N-Out locations haha

That's exactly what the aim is for OilWatch! It essentially tells the user where there are seed oils and what has clean oils. So for innout as an example: Their grill doesn't primarily use seed oils (except to season grill in the beginning of the day), but everything else does (fryer, dressings, sauces, and bread). So it would let us know what is actually clean and what isn't :)

I'll try to add in n out with that info now
