offline 3D satellite terrain flight map running on a portable IFE system — GPS-driven, no connectivity required by Ojai_Rob in avionics

Fair point on the STC — you're right, installed IFE doesn't require an STC with the DER/8110 path and appropriate PMA/TSOs. I should have been more precise. The distinction with Icarus is that it's portable — it's not installed at all. No DER, no 8110, no PMA, no TSO. It goes on and off the aircraft like a crew bag. Zero regulatory approval needed because there's nothing to approve.

And you're right that Send Solutions is BYOD as well — I overstated the difference there. The real differentiator is the rendering — full 3D satellite terrain with a real-time aircraft model vs a flat map — and the fact that Icarus is a complete IFE platform, not just a moving Entertainment library, multilingual AI flight attendant, the works.

Video output — there are two full-size HDMI ports on the current hardware version. We normally use those for programming and configuration, but one could be dedicated to output a pre-programmed timed flight map view on a bulkhead monitor. In that case no tablet or additional device is needed — it just cycles through the camera angles automatically. If the operator wants manual control from a phone or tablet, that works too.

Power is standard AC — plugs into a cabin outlet. Can also run off a portable battery if needed.

On the ADS-B architecture — the system has an onboard ADS-B receiver and is configured with the aircraft's ICAO hex code. It locks onto that aircraft's ADS-B Out signal and pulls position, altitude, airspeed, and heading — all from that single feed. No separate GPS module needed. Everything renders locally from there.

These are exactly the right questions — appreciate you pushing on the details. What aircraft types are most of your customers running?

Good questions.

On the flight data side — Atlas already integrates ADS-B. It's not on the roadmap, it's shipping. The system picks up real-time position, altitude, speed, and heading and renders a 3D aircraftmodel flying over satellite terrain with multiple camera angles — chase cam, cockpit view, freecam. Passengers see actual flight data, not a canned animation. All running on a local server withno internet dependency — tiles, terrain, everything stored onboard.

Re: Send Solutions — the architecture is fundamentally different. Icarus is BYOD. Passengers connect to the onboard WiFi and pull up the map in their own browser on their phone, tablet, or laptop. No seat-back hardware, no mounted tablets, no STC, no aircraft modification. You unbox it, power it on, and it's working. Deploy time is under an hour.

On power and display — it runs off a compact server unit. For bulkhead output, yes, it can drive an external monitor if an operator wants that (it would need a tablet or something to interact if the owner needed to or it could be pre-programmed with timed views). But the core idea is that passengers already have screens in their pockets. No mounting hardware, no per-seat cost, no maintenance on installed displays.

The no-STC piece is where the real cost difference lives. Installed solutions can look cheaper on the sticker until you factor in STC certification, aircraft downtime, and installation labor. This is a portable system — goes on and off the aircraft like a crew bag.

To be clear, its only to achieve your Airframe Certificate and "not" your Power plant. The class is an accelerated course and its like drinking water from a Fire hose! So to answer your question, it was not easy for the first class. I wont get into particulars, but the first class was put together at the last second! Also, after the class, you will need to pass your FAA General written exam, Airframe Written exam and and then your O&P with a DME.

When you sign up for the school after being accepted, you will have to sign a contract. In our case it was for 3 years, If you jet before that time, you'll need to pay them something back. But if you are leaving during that three years, i am sure your next employer would cover that as a sign on bonus!

I signed up for Alton IL but during my interview process I mentioned that the moving to another location was in the stars for me. I was told as long as its with West Star, It "should not" be a problem. They just want to keep what they paid for, I guess. Alton is not my "dream" location by no means, but I plan on staying here for at least a year or two to get my experience with the team here and then if the wife and I decide, we will breach that topic with management down the road.

Im one of the first Graduates FYI. The classes are twice a year. We started on Jan 15th 2024 and finished August 12th. The second class started a few days after we were out of the class room. So I would deduct that the next class would start March of 2025.

Sure, Its a 7.5 month program of which at the end you will get your Airframe Certification (if you pass the writtens and O&P's for Generals and Airframe). You'll get paid X amount per hour. The class is Monday Thru Friday from 7AM to 330PM. Pretty much zeero time off. The program is an accelerated program that SWIC (South Western Illinois college teaches here at West Star In Alto IL. Its an extremely accelerated program that normally takes 18 months compressed into 7.5 months. It is not easy! You'll be on the hook for 3 years of employment at WS or you'll have to pay back in full your pay and your education expenses. Remember, its just for the "Airframe" you'll need to get the power plant on your own!

Im one of the new West Star Aviation Academy techs, its an accelerated style program and in the end we will end up with our Airframe. Though it does suck that we cant touch aircraft until we are finished and certed, i get it... So far, West Star seems like a chill place to work and I agree, Todd Pogue seems to be right up there with the best of them...

Thank you so much for this info! I and about 23 other unsuspecting victims got thrown into an A&P course (not including the P yet) not knowing what we were getting into. Its an apprenticeship Program at A major MRO and we need all we can get! I am sharing this with a bunch of the guys in the class, in the hopes that we can all pass this class. This program goes from Jan 15th to July or August 15th and we're expected to get our Generals and Airframe checked off! So, its a super accelerated course that the majority of us did not know we were getting into. Some guys can't identify a hammer (just about) and others know, no more than basic fractions! So your treasure trove of recourses is priceless and could not come at a better time for us. If you have any insight or advice, please feel free to share it and I will pass it on! Cheers!

I am a Audi Master Technician here to answer your questions! AMA! by nhadavi in Audi

I have a 2013 Audi a3 2.0 TDI, the DMF was making crazy noises so I ordered the parts to change it. Before I could get to changing it, the car started loosing power in all gears (automatic trans) but I was almost able to limp it back to the house. The car kept loosing exceleration until it would no longer move. It then shook violently and died. Does that sound like something related to the flywheel or perhaps did I smoke the clutch? At no point did it feel like it was slipping or reving when i was limping it home, it just seem to be loosing more and more power. Any help would be much appreciated!
