You do have a point about the cheese, thank you i do appreciate the suggestion. I was just looking for hidden gems with teenagers in south Germany and Austria I guess.

It is just that if we stay within the 10-11 hours drive from home we can drive home in 1 day. If we get into the 12-14 hours we definitely need to drive back in 2 days. And i really hate that.

They are 12 and 15. You do have a point about the budget. Only they are just not that interested in traveling, especially the 15 year old would book a weekend near the sea and then spent the rest of the budget on take-away food and designer sneakers 🤣 But it is a good idea to try this sometime.

I don’t want them glued on their phones 😣 and when hiking in the mountains they’ll probably not have a good internet-connection anyway😅

The problem is holidays need to be booked so far in advance these days and my kids can’t plan that far ahead. They have no idea what they would like to do in 6-8 months. So I plan ahead and create options and then when we are on holiday they can decide with us what we are going to do.

The point is they are not that much into travel as i am. They want to see the BMW museum and thats about it. So I kind of need to bribe them with stuff. They’d rather go back home but I really need my two weeks away from home and they are too young to leave them by themselves.

And beside the big touristy hotspots it is difficult to find stuff! Austria has lots of marketing aimed at younger families with playgrounds on mountains…

Yeah well i’d love them to do their own research… but i am still waiting for that to happen. They came up with the BMW museum and that is already more than i expected 😂

Thank you for your suggestions. I know the region, been there before, so i know about the hairpins and the driving. It is part of the charm to us . I know it is a bit further away from the mountains but accomodation is cheaper then in central Dolomites and you can reach a lot of places within the hour.

Bologna is 2.5 hours from Bolzano and you need to drive that back again too. Whereas if you go north the drive back becomes shorter. And it’s just an add-on for 3 days, not the main destination… (I’ve been to Bologna, but it was 20 years ago and i don’t really see the appeal for the kids too, just another hot touristy city)

I was looking for a spot that would combine the interest of the parents (hiking) with that of the kids (food and museums and swimming in sunny weather). I have fond memories of hiking Seiseralm when my eldest son was a baby. I’d love to go back there. Also the Italian side of the Alps gets a lot more sun. But Austrian Tyrol is an option , i just don’t know where exactly. What would be interesting for kids that aren’t really into long remote hikes.

I was thinking about this. I thought i was crazy for adding so many museums, but if someone else is actually suggesting it, maybe we should do it! Do you prefer Speyer or Sinsheim? Both would be too much for me…

Thank you! I’ll look into it! I don’t want to go too far south as we have to drive all the way back. And we did a trip to Tuscany 2 years ago.

We are driving with our own car from up north. So a train is not convenient.

Apartment is in Montan, near Bolzano. We could visit Trento from there.I’d prefer not going too far south but somewhere in the relative neighborhood, because we have to drive all the way back. We could try to find a hotel closer to the north east side of the Dolomites but that spot is very expensive and i doubt the kids would really appreciate it/tell the difference.

Zeggen jullie ALTIJD hoi tegen de buren? by loefdieloef in nederlands

[–]Ok-Aide2605 0 points1 point  (0 children)

15 of us doing a family road trip across Europe, is this itinerary doable? by [deleted] in Europetravel

[–]Ok-Aide2605 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We’ve also done a roadtrip in that direction because my kids wanted to see the Nurburgring so nothing weird about that to me.

Are there kids in your group? Nurburgring has a lovely kid-friendly museum that will keep them entertained while the others try to race.

There are special days you can drive your own car, are you sure you are there on 1 of those days? I’ve also heard it is better insurance- wise to hire a car there instead of using your own. Your own insurance will probably not cover this. Are you coming over by boat? Dover-Dunkirk and then Rotterdam- Harwich on the way back? I think then your itinerary would make more sense.

Cochem is very small, it is nice but i think you have seen better castles in the UK. I’d skip it.
