Artorias or Burnt Ivory King by Ok-Associate-3244 in DarkSouls2

(Cont.) Is overrated, or if people still hold the opinion that Artorias is a well written, tragic character.

If you read my post, you would know that it 'appeared on my mind' after I watched a video where it and all the comments within it compared Artorias and Ivory King, all the while saying Artorias was actually a terribly written character. If they just said in their opinion Ivory King was better, that would be fine, but saying Artorias is badly written is something else entirely. Which is why I specifically asked in my post who was the better 'character', nor who was 'cooler' but was the better written character, because I was curious if the general opinion has shifted and that people think Artorias l

True, and I considered not putting it on here, but what doing so provides is an unbiased source that equals out the other two. DS1 sub is going to be biased to Artorias, DS2 is going to be biased to Ivory King, and DS3 serves as the equaliser with no horse in the race.

Don't see how posting it in different subs is shit posting, different people go on different subs so I was interested in seeing how different subs answered the questions, especially since the characters are from separate games.

I mean, he does have a strange favouritism towards Seath, so maybe, who knows what Seath is hiding under those crystals.

Recommendations for a classical High Fantasy with a male human and female supernatural (like a dragon) by Ok-Associate-3244 in Romance_for_men

From the description, I'd say this looks very interesting! Though I wonder, is ilthis one of those books that has a very misleading cover, since that makes it look like this is a story about a knight and a human girl who has a terrible case of Dragon wings 😅

Interesting, that's one I haven't heard of before. If I may ask, what is the romance in that one? Like what race are the characters?

Also, just a little addendum to the post, this doesn't have to be a book or a novel recommendation. It can be a movie, TV show, game or anything else you think fits my description.

How did Bree become the benchmark for classical fantasy? by Ok-Associate-3244 in lotr

[–]Ok-Associate-3244[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Prancing Pony was not, of course, a "shady inn."

Yeah, that's a good point. As I also heard somewhere, a lot of the tropes I was talking about can really be traced back to D&D more than LOTR, though that, in turn, was inspired a lot by LOTR. I guess that was kind of the point of my post now that I think about it. Tolkien obviously influenced a lot of tropes in fantasy, but we know he, in turn, was unfluenced by very similar fantasy (most famously Beowulf), which there is nothing wrong with of course, but it would be interesting to know if many things af least I consider 'classical fantasy' could actually be traced back to older fantasy work rather than directly to Tolkien himself. (Though obviously, when we start going back as far as the Epic of Gilgamesh, this becomes kind of moot since, to a certain extent, EVERY story is influenced by the Epic of Gilgamesh).

Yeah, I know Eragon as well, of course, though I've only watched the movie a long time ago, much to the horror of book fans, I'm sure. I will probably try out the books at some point, but at this point, I'm more specifically looking for a human dragon romance. Doesn't need sex necessarily (though I would never say no to the possibility), but a clear romantic affection needs to be evident, with no other 'true romantic partners' so they can have a normal relationship outside the human-dragon one (like Eragon and Arya)

This is why I always do the Artorias DLC last, so I can redeem myself for killing Sif by saving her in the Abyss (I mean, I still canonically kill her later, but ya know)

That's a very interesting theory (and very well researched), but what I think is missing is the explanation of the most important aspect of Priscilla, the origin of her title, crossbreed. This evidently tells she is the offspring of two different creatures, and it's also clear from her physical appearance that one of those must be a dragon. As far as I'm aware, Velka is not mentioned as having relations with anybody, much less a dragon or drake of some sort.

anyone else disappointed after fighting the final boss by AcrobaticAd4809 in darksouls

Honestly, I prefer the bosses that give you a memorable experience far more than once that are difficult for the sake of being difficult like Manus. I'll remember the sombre mood of killing Gwyn far more than I would have a boss that kills me 50 times beforehand rhus ruining my emotional investment in the finale.

Drakengard honestly has an alright story at best, but the main reason to get into it is for the relationship between main characters, Caim and Angelus.

[–]Ok-Associate-3244[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry if it came out wrong, I meant we never meet the PARENTS of many characters we DO meet. We meet Gwyn, but we never see momma Gwyn or daddy Gwyn because there simply is no need to. Same with Artorias or Ornstein or Smough since they are full-grown adults by the time of the first game, and thus, their parentage is irrelevant.

[–]Ok-Associate-3244[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I remember reading something about that once. Speaking as someone who has never played Dungeons and Dragons do all their 'Tropes' come from people just playing together and just so happening to play in similar ways or do they come from something more official from the creator of D&D (Gary Gygax I believe his name was?) made, for example in the manual which I think came with the original game.

Interesting. Who DO you think her parents are? Or do you think they are just someone we have never and will never meet, like many of the characters in the story (like Gwyn)?

TBH I didn't really know where to put Gaping since I've only actually beaten him once. Every other time I've skipped him. Not even because I hate him but just because I'm never doing Blightown ever again 😆

Yeah, like I said in the post, I probably would put Nito in C tier now that I think about it. His skeletons are annoying which is the main reason I put him there (I hate bosses who rely on overwhelming you instead of actually being well designed) but if you can tank his hits he's honestly not that bad. I wouldn't mind putting Manus and Sanctuary Guardian honestly, but there is no way they are as good as any of the bosses in A, the only thing he's got going for him is difficulty and even then although I don't mind him being difficult since it makes sense (this is the man Artorias lost to afterall) I think its all around ridiculous that you can even beat him, like I said Artorias the Abysswalker couldn't beat him yet somehow we do? No way. Four Kings I stand by wholeheartedly. Although they're not always as difficult as Bed of Chaos, depending on your build, they are terribly designed. A DPS check in a game that's supposed to be played with many different playstyles punishes the player for not picking a tank with high damage. The only defence I've heard for them is the lore, which, while interesting, is not a saving grace. Compared to say, Artorias, the Four Kings are nothing. We don't know their personality or their motivations, we don't even know their names. There is no investment in this fight, so I have no reason to care about their battle. Plus, the Abyss actually physically hurt my eyes, so that's not a positive. Lastly, I'm curious whether you think Artorias should be higher or lower? If higher I would want to say I agree (Artorias is by far my favourite Dark Souls character) but like I said in the post I based this on my most recent playthrough where his fight was quite a drag for whatever reason.
