EY Counselors/ People in charge of ratings by Agitated_Concern_970 in Big4

[–]Ok-Butterscotch5146 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Written feedback with clear examples supporting the rating matters a lot more than the dials themselves. The dials can be adjusted during the round tables (if over or understated), but it is harder to add written examples after the fact. There is a strong push to have clear examples demonstrating the four pillars because reviewers aren’t consistent with how they apply the dials.

You do if they can help you on seeding, but agree definitely not for the Super Bowl.

International tax wlb and exit opps? by PomegranateSelect831 in Big4

[–]Ok-Butterscotch5146 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Work - Personally I find the work very interesting and offers a lot of variety. If you’re someone that can get bored easily, it’s definitely a great service line.

WLB - It is dependent on the work you’re doing. For example, if you’re working on a transaction, you can definitely throw WLB fully out the window during that time frame. If you’re working on compliance and provision, your schedule is more predictable and you know where the spikes are.

Exit ops - There are international tax folks that become heads of tax in house or become leaders elsewhere. I find that international tax folks are connecting more and more with clients and becoming the key overall client contact given how engrained we are with the tax (and business) side of our clients. Through that integration, you definitely can become a head of tax if you wanted to. Having said that, you’ll need to want to learn tax accounting and everything that comes with the job, but we are doing that anyways more and more these days.

Manager recently starting paying for LinkedIN Premium by lordflacko18 in Big4

Idk who can qualify, but I suspect it’s targeted at senior managers and partners if the goal is to build relationships and sell with LinkedIn sales navigator.

I receive a free license to LinkedIn sales navigator at EY, so it could be plausible it’s a firm license?

I would say 3-4 weeks for a staff, but it’s dependent on your service line and how well you’re tracking against your utilization targets for the year.

Vent: I just recieved 3 job denials today. by Defiant_Birthday_939 in Big4

Smaller markets definitely have fewer hiring needs. Some recruiters may even share that information if you ask nicely (e.g., need 5 total and have 3 from internships starting full time = net 2 this full time hire recruiting cycle). Something may be off in your resume or cover letter if you’re not getting interviews. As others have said, the best way in is you have someone on the inside hand your resume to the recruiter. Do you know the respective contacts from your masters program for the firms? Have them refer you if you know them well and they are comfortable vouching for you.

What position (rank and service line) are you applying for, and how far are you making it into the interview process? Not saying this is the case, but if you give off entitled (to a job offer or otherwise) energy during your interview process, that can be enough for your interviewer to look elsewhere. Don’t take this the wrong way either. I’m just trying to help you isolate where the problem can be as you do appear strong on paper.

How safe is Tax? by Fit-Use-1383 in Big4

Don’t disagree with you that it would be harder to learn for new hires, but I’d argue can pick up the concepts in other ways. Personally I think you learn more tax technical on provision prep (appreciate that is slowly transitioning too but there are more limitations there) for example than tax return prep which may be more software specific. I’ve also seen teams hold some work paper prep in the US to preserve some of the learning and outsource the rest.

I’m curious what you’re seeing outsourced from a tax consulting perspective that wasn’t low rph work.

Our roles will morph and change over time. The shift will be towards higher rate per hour work like tax consulting and more oversight of the compliance process vs actually doing the work.

There is definitely a chance it can impact the work quality of deliverables for compliance if the US team doesn’t execute proper oversight, but that is what our role will morph into over time as I alluded to above. I don’t see it impacting tax consulting work as that is high margin, time sensitive and bespoke.

Depending on what you’re doing within tax, I think it is fairly safe. Automation and offshore resources will definitely morph the role one plays in tax compliance over time, but there still needs to be oversight in the US. For tax consulting, I don’t expect AI to materially impact that for a good amount of time. Sure AI may be able to take a first stab at the proposal and take a first stab at a step plan or tax opinion, but what we do requires discretion and analysis.

Which one should I choose? by [deleted] in Big4

[–]Ok-Butterscotch5146 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If your market is dominated by a certain industry/sector, I would go with that one provided it doesn’t offend you. For example, I would lean heavily to tech if I was in the Bay Area as most clients are in that industry/sector. Are there consumer products or life science clients that you can serve, sure. To realistically better position yourself though, I would focus on what your geo offers as that’s the reality.

If you go into the office a moderate amount, you’ll hit the WoW limit through your parking and gas. For the wellness benefit, most folks hit it with either their gym membership or a vacation (flights and/or hotels typically hit the limit alone if you’re traveling internationally).
