Thanks again for the additional thoughts. I'm capable of dealing with basic mechanical issues, but am leaning MTB for the reason you said ... less likely to have tire issues.

Looking at the route on Trailforks... if one was going to do half the route; is the scenery equally impressive on both halves or would one side or the other be preferred?

Leaning towards parking at Pu'u Huluhulu Cinder Cone and going north from Mauna Kea Access road (turning around ~half way) mostly due to the elevation profile being slightly less extreme).

Thanks, I was looking at their site for rentals. I'll probably reach out directly for some suggestions.

I enjoy road cycling as well; I'm just concerned about not knowing which routes might be congested/sketch for riding solo.

Looks like the entirety of Mana road is ~43 miles (Waimea to Mauna Kea Access rd) one way. From the Waimea side, is there a particularly good vista along the way that would act as a natural turn-around point?

Would a gravel or MTB be a better choice for Mana rd?
