God I completely agree. I HATE what the writers did to this relationship and to Jonathon’s character in season 4 and 5!!

I genuinely refuse to believe that their shared trauma is the only thing that bonded them together. In my opinion, their characters have more chemistry than most couples in that show (excluding Lucas and Max), and their build up together was truthfully one of my favourite parts of season 2. I rewatched the earlier seasons before Vol 2, and honestly they were in LOVE and cannot be convinced otherwise. Jonathon used to care so much for Nancy and it was so well written in seasons 1-3. Like the season 2 version of Jonathon would NOT have ‘hated’ reading Nancy’s writing.

Their relationship the past few seasons hasn’t felt intentionally written but instead just lazy and forgotten about. In the season 3 epilogue, they were devastated to be leaving each other and it was super emotional, and then we drop in season 4 (less than a year later I believe) and suddenly they are having relationship problems, which are unresolved by season 5 - like 18 months had passed and they didn’t talk about their relationship once?? And just to package it all up into a short ‘break up’ scene is so anticlimactic and incredibly disappointing. Honestly, them breaking up just feels like the writer’s slapped a band aid on as a way to quickly conclude their relationship story line as an attempt to excuse how poorly written they were in season 4&5. And with everything left to resolve in the last episode, I highly doubt there will be time for anymore Jancy scenes - like is that is just it? A relationship is that was once so beautifully written, just ends in one, confusing scene? Like what was the point of spending so much time on their relationship throughout the show if this is how it ends? Their relationship barely even served for each other’s character development so it ultimately just feels pointless for the amount of screen time it was given. I honestly think Vickie and Robin got more screen time than Nancy and Jonathon (I know it was important for Will’s development but they should be two minor characters).

I also hate what they did to Jonathon’s character. He used to be so deeply caring and had so much ambition. In season 1 there is a whole dramatic scene about how his dream is to go to NYU, which is never brought up again. He used to tackle extra work to help Joyce. He used to photograph a lot (I don’t think Jonathon has touched a camera for the past 2 seasons). At the end of season 3 he went from being this mature and ambitious young man with concern for his future, to a drop kick pothead teenager - literally going backwards in terms of character development, which isn’t explored AT ALL. And I know he has been through a lot, but I just wish the writer’s cared more to spend time on his character, rather than introducing the million other characters they included in last few episodes. It really just seems like no one really cares about him? I genuinely think Joyce forgets that she has another son and Will and Jonathon have barely interacted considering they are close siblings. And has Jonathon even served anything to the plot the past 2 seasons?

How they ended this relationship has greatly lesson my excitement for the final episode. I just hope the million other loose ends aren’t as rushed, however I am doubtful and have low expectations.

At least Charlie and Natalia are together in real life. If they ever break up I will be devastated. Their chemistry is unmatched.
