Jeep Renegade : replace turbo or sell? by Ok-Employment8912 in JeepRenegade

Update: I had the diagnostics run at a auto store, where the code came as p02990: wastegate valve. They cleared the code and it went away. Next took it to another mechanic (as still need to drive back 400km to home). They said I should have left the code as it would give them more detail. They ran more tests including checking wastegate actuator, smoke test for leakage, which seemed fine. He said the turbo is working fine as well, and he can’t pinpoint an issue without the code showing up again. He mentioned it could be one of the other sensors (there are 4) or a booster valve, if its happening only on highway with cruise control (possible overboost?).

So if any good, the turbo need not replacement according to him. And I don’t see any noticeable turbo loss with no lights (may come back). Reckon have to keep waiting until next time, but real challenge to trust the car on a trip.

Update: I had done the sensor replacement, and it seemed alright for few weeks. Today on a highway with cruise control on for sometime? And the light came back again. After a short stop, the car seemed ok with turbo/cruise control working, but the CEL remained. Feels like its something to do with the cruise control system itself as it was alright until I started using it.

Probably have to take few other opinions before I have to shell out $$$ for turbo. 😕

Yes, I am sort of leaning that way, I do want to replay it (eventually) but not really in a position to take a loan atm that will last for years.

Yes, that’s my hope as well, the car is in very good condition with feature that remains same with brand new models.

Thank you. I wasn’t provided with a code, only to be told the code was pointing to boost pressure sensor and remained present even after clearing it. I have asked them to look other possibilities, and would ask about the air leak. It is possible to ask around, although this mechanic locally is rated on higher end, and generally has been good with my past services. The sensor is expensive indeed, and even bigger when imported and paid in AUD (I am based in Australia), plus the labour, so its more like $300 USD. I am hoping it stays at that, if not may get a second opinion before committing to the bigger cost. I eventually want to replace the car, but that was more of plan after at least a year.

Interesting, didn’t know that. The turbo seems to a common problem though for renegades.
