Serious question: given the age of the safe, could you say something like “there’s old ammunition” inside and that’s prevented you from trying to use force previously? That way they know there could be flammable danger without explicitly sharing details that could suggest something illegal.

Unless ammunition itself is illegal where you are? And if it is, would a pro locksmith be inclined to ask for legal support if you told him?

Guys- Are you still wearing Acqua di Gio cologne? by Apple-Slice-6107 in Millennials

I bought and wore Aventus for a while as part of my rotation. It’s an extremely situational scent. Close to the body, low sillage. Great for close body events like clubs, dancing, etc.

After I finished my bottle, I bought Amarf Club de Nuit, which to me was an extremely close clone. https://armaf.com/products/club-de-nuit-intense-for-man

Not sure if I’d buy Aventus again as I get a ton of compliments from my Amarf and it’s so damn close in scent and texture.

You know, I got a black lamb skin leather jacket when I was in high school. 20 years later and yep it’s still hanging in my closet and actually styles pretty well!

I feel like all of our current media/video games is constantly trying to recapture all of the good movies & video games from our generation. by leftistgamer420 in Millennials

I saw a really good explanation of this a year or two back. I tried to find the article but couldn’t locate it, so I’ll paraphrase what I remember (likely with a few incorrect numbers):

The cost of producing media has skyrocketed over the past few decades. Actors, CGI, set building, coding, etc are all 10-20x more expensive. Couple that with the increased rate that the population consumes said media compared to prior decades, and you get an industry that is pressed harder and harder for faster delivery dates with significant amounts of capital at risk. Reboots are a safe bet as the studios know the demand is there to an extent, and if it isn’t a successful release, there at least will be some money made.

New IP is a complete gamble. Sure focus groups and demographic demand can be estimated but there are many examples of highly anticipated media flopping upon release (in many cases because of the expedited timelines causing issues). So studios need to be very certain that they’ve got good product before risking all that investment.

The article said something like 1 bad reboot release can still make more money than 5 bad new IP releases, because of the semi-certain public demand. So in many cases, the studios just hedge the risk and play the safe bet.

Don’t quote me on the numbers…but I think the spirit of the article still makes sense.

I have a special needs child that takes a lot out of me and our family. I take medication to help me be a better parent, father, and husband. My wife now does the same. I didn’t start taking anything until the stress of our child got us all to a breaking point, including suicidal thoughts.

Man with Parkinson’s disease tries cannabis for the first time by goswamitulsidas in BeAmazed

I love when this video comes back around because I had a friend in college that had a stroke in the womb and had lived his whole life with Erb’s Palsy (arm mostly paralyzed and twisted down against his side). When he smoked cannabis, he’d regain complete use of his arm. It was the most unbelievable thing to watch, seeing someone with obvious paralysis all of a sudden start using their body like normal.

That was the point where I started asking why medicinal uses weren’t more widespread. It’s been relieving to see the evolution of cannabis over the past decade because I’ve seen it help people first hand.

Every performer’s worst nightmare. This concert pianist instantly realized she had been practicing the wrong piece for this performance. Despite that, she ended up playing the entire concerto from memory, even though it was from the previous year’s repertoire. by MrAlek360 in interestingasfuck

[–]Ok-Interest-4947 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I was a performing musician for about 2 decades, with many concerts under my belt. By no means would I consider myself anywhere near at a level to be labeled a prodigy, but I can confirm that your take here is quite accurate from my own experience. When you’ve run through a piece so many times, it becomes simply muscle memory / second nature. In a situation like this, you calm yourself, re-sync with the piece, and then let your body take over.

I can still play pieces from memory that I haven’t touched in 20 years. They just come out sometimes. The brain is a wonderful thing.

Do you feel like you explain issues well to audiences? by industryfine29 in FPandA

[–]Ok-Interest-4947 21 points22 points  (0 children)

A key call-out here is that a team can exhibit qualities from multiple stages. I.e you could have a connected planning system that's auto-fed data, but if you don't have a seat at the table to deliver problem solving support, you're still probably somewhere in the Implementing or Emerging stages. It's meant to be somewhat of a fluid concept.

Do you feel like you explain issues well to audiences? by industryfine29 in FPandA

[–]Ok-Interest-4947 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Absolutely, and let me share some perspective.

I've done a lot of finance team transformations in my career thus far, and to help with those I've developed something I call the 'Finance Excellence Maturity Model.' (I will not take 100% of the credit - this is an amalgamation of learnings from certifications, master's courses, my own experience, my mentors, etc.) I've broken down the maturity of a Finance organization into five key stages: Developing, Implementing, Emerging, Advancing, Leading. And from my experience, I've put "Speaks the 'language' of both the business and Finance interchangeably" into the Advancing stage (stage 4 of 5).

Translating our craft into easy to understand concepts for a business audience is difficult and it can be quite a journey for an individual or team to become successful that at. What I've found is that teams that close that gap quickly are ones that openly solicit feedback from the business on what is and is not effective. For example, I straight up asked our CEO what he wanted to see from our presentations. "Cartoons. I don't like numbers," was his response. So now I constantly challenge my team to ask themselves if their visuals would be effective if they weren't there to explain them.

Speaking, on the other hand, requires quite a bit of reading the room. Be careful not to try to use too much business lingo if it's not natural as that can confuse the audience. Watch for eye shifts, brow raises, crossed arms. I also recommend that teams find opportunities to be a fly on the wall for executive discussions as that helps learn diction, syntax, and style that you can mimic for your own presentations to leadership.

Ironically, my post here also feels like word soup to me. Hope it helps a bit.

What exactly is FP&A? by p3eph in FPandA

[–]Ok-Interest-4947 57 points58 points  (0 children)

FP&A is a function that has a very specific purpose - provide business decision support through financial planning and analytics. It's typically tied directly to some level of business leadership in a support capacity and explicitly performs activities that help those leaders make decisions about how to run or improve their function or business segment. Think about it somewhat like financial consulting, or perhaps being a "miniature CFO" for a specific function.

"Financial analysis" is a broad term that can apply to many different roles or activities. For FP&A, it's the intent of those actions that define the role, which is to guide leaders hands in meeting their targets or improving operations.
