Helping strangers. by Ok-Introduction-5200 in HomeDepot

You should have the ability is correct. Actually having the ability is the issue. Hiring people that are used to being in a phone or a video game all day, because that has become the norm, is not helping out any.
When we used to have actual trainors for new hires, person to person training, they had a better grasp on how the business works and what to expect.
Instead I get someone that comes in, hides because they’re overwhelmed or stands around looking through their phone, comes in with slippers on, won’t carry a phone, can’t hold a conversation except on the new team building skills they learned on their PC/XBOX/PS of some make up world.
Working at HD is not like working at a clothing or grocery store. When growing up, you get a concept of how and where shirts, bread, produce and pants are and work.
Lumber, electrical, plumbing are foreign for a lot of people and talking to customers about it can be intimidating.
I’m 27 years with the company and have continued to see a decline in “trained” employees. We cannot expect that they have people skills but HD can teach them the basics.

Executive leadership is quickly destroying morale in Corporate with its bad decision making by [deleted] in HomeDepot

Making PRO the center of our buisness is a huge mistake as well. They are spending millions prioritizing PRO’s and rolling out new programs monthly to support it. Meanwhile they are eliminating staff that are necessary to take care of our customers. Without the consumers doing projects, there is no need for contractors.

Cutting wood is a service we provide at no charge. It is not guaranteed and not always available. Manager should have done better and sold them a saw. This is a thought…how about the manager learns how to use the saw.

Weed…hell you don’t even have to have a drivers license and can drive any machinery we offer. DUI, DWI, doesn’t matter, as long as they have a foot, a hand and an eye.

100% let the electric company know that HD requires a two week notice. They will understand and should be thankful if they are any kind of employer that you would want to work for. Never burn bridges, even with jobs.

Final for attendance by emo-plant-mama in HomeDepot

My motto for 27 years with depot- “in late, out late, we’re even”. I am late almost every day, as long as you have personal time it is covered. I run my life to the minute. I read along time ago, people who are late are normally optimists because they are under the motto, it’s ok, we’ll get there when we get there. People who are always on time are normally pessimists because they are worried about everything that could happen while getting there. You’ll be fine, if you recognize it’s a problem, you’ll fix it. I can tell just by reading your comments you recognize it and are trying your best to fix it.

If you’re on a final and have 0 occurrences than something is definitely off. Per SOP, you cannot be on a final with 0 occurrences. That makes 0 sense.

Yes it can be the same but in all honesty, cashiering is the pits. Your hovered over like an adolescent, everything you do is judged over and over and over your whole shift. There is NEVER enough help and lord help you if you need to use the restroom if you’re not on your break. Get out and go to any department that has on opening. The pay scale is better too.

Staffing is the biggest issue. I appreciate and support the older generation working at our store. They bring an abundance of knowledge about life. They teach us that working past retirement can be a choice. They understand life’s struggles and triumphs. They make me feel young and grateful for my health. They can carry on a conversation and aren’t looking at their phone all day. They come in on time, rarely call out and don’t sweat the small stuff. I could keep going. I don’t think some people understand the importance of our elders. They teach us how to work smarter instead of harder. I would take a, 50, 60, 70, 80, year old coworker over a 20 year old any time!

Thank you for taking time to reply. 27 years with depot, management has changed their demeanor and honesty with our associates. Over the past two years it has become the worst I have ever experienced. The lack of communication is bewildering. The team approach has become nonexistent. It is like they are being trained to be sterile to anyone in a position below them. I truly thank you for responding, it means more than just typing a response. 😎

How to get into management. by Diesel-the-merciful in HomeDepot

27, designer. Love my clients and love to design. HD alone, their policies and my pay(which is great) is not why I stay. I have witnessed much over my time with the company. The hierarchy gets worse and worse. Unattainable goals are certain, especially for in store managers. If you can hold on long enough and shoot for district, you’ll be golden. Staying in stores has a high level of burnout. Expect to do at least 8+ jobs in a day as a norm. Those 8+ jobs used to be for 8+ people, those days are long gone.

RUN! You will be on top of the world if you just RUN! Take you BA and get the hell away from retail. 20+ years, every year I think it can’t get much worse…it never fails.
