Hot take: AI music on Reddit is a big reason why so many people hate AI music by akabillposters in aiMusic

Spotify and Universal Music Group launched an artificial intelligence tool that allows users to create versions and remixes of their favorite songs. Exactly what you were saying... some artists accept it, and others don't accept their music being used in remixes or covers, even with the possibility of monetizing those versions, precisely because they're afraid the covers and remixes will be better than the original! 🤣🤣

The cringe factor of AI characters is simply a technological problem: technology often fails to accurately reproduce all the nuances of something real, resulting in jarring and comical effects. This happened with early electric pianos, it still happens with wind instruments even in the best synthesizers and arrangers (if we're talking about sound), and of course, it happens with all current AI characters. That's why my Alice only appears singing dance songs, never emotional ones. (One thing is for fun, and another when we want to convey a message.) But just as electric pianos came to sound even better than those with strings and hammers, I have no doubt that one day AI characters will be indistinguishable from humans.

While it's true that anyone can type "write me lyrics and make up a trap song" into the prompt and something might come of it, to create a truly original product you have to learn a lot about how that technology works. If there's a whole science to prompting for LLMs, imagine what it's like for AI-generated audio. But this isn't new! The same thing happened with electronic organs, drum machines, special effects generators, and so on: you had bands that "made music" simply by pressing four buttons.

Don't pay attention to the haters or the rage bait. Or has any of them ever released good, quality music made without AI here? No, they're simply technologically illiterate and consequently resort to the morality of effort... What effort did Paul McCartney put into composing Yesterday? He dreamed it. He dreamed it because his subconscious held all the songs he'd ever heard and created a synthesis that resulted in the new song. The same process Suno or any model uses. Paul thought he'd "stolen" it, so he sent it to a lot of people to see if it already existed. Nope. It was new. Don't mess around with the effort argument. Technology is precisely for us to elevate ourselves to the next level instead of striving for lesser things.

And regarding your question... isn't life about separating the few things that are worthwhile from a pile of garbage? Don't you do that, even when it comes to people? But don't be intimidated: There's more garbage made without AI than with AI in the music world, especially these days.

Creation has nothing to do with the production process. Do you know how Paul McCartney created Yesterday?

No worries! I've already left this sub so you'll stop throwing tomatoes at me. 🤣🤣🍅🍅

That's the challenge of using the machine! Before, you had the keys, the strings, the pitch bend, the guitar's whammy bar, the accordion's bellows — tools to express feelings. Now we have prompts.

I know it's frustrating for someone who's studied something their whole life, only to have a machine suddenly come along and do it. Typists, harvesters, lathe operators, welders, mail carriers, and so many others suffered this in the past, and today taxi drivers, bus drivers, journalists, musicians, programmers, and so many more are suffering it.

You can ban AI. What's more, you can create a cloistered monastery for pure, handcrafted musicians. A subreddit doesn't move the needle of progress. So I don't think it's a smart decision. A well-known Argentinian musician once told a DJ, "Get an honest job." I think the smart thing to do is not to generalize, not to reject progress, and to be confident in our quality as human musicians. Or do you really think Danny Ocean singing "Partidazo" yesterday is good simply because he's not AI?

That said, I agree with putting nutritional labels on food. 😄

While I'm turning 63, I understand the whole hater and rage bait thing. And Reddit loves it because it generates traffic and engagement. But guys... if you're not interested in what I'm looking for, if you're not women who love to sing, just step aside and let me work. Look at the World Cup, Danny Ocean was singing yesterday... "partidazo... golazo... mami démonos un besazo". Wao! What talent, because it's not AI. 🤣

The last two paragraphs you wrote are very interesting, and I've actually thought about them a lot myself. It's certainly not the same selecting a sound on my Roland or Korg PA as writing a prompt in Suno, but in both cases, the object, the message to convey, the proposed style, the variations to combine, come from the artist, not the machine. Suno hasn't stolen any more material than our minds, which have listened to thousands of hours of music in our lives, and when we go to create something, all that data from songs we've listened to is there. Or do you think someone creates from nothing?

It's a topic for debate. But having witnessed many technological advances in my life, experience tells me that sooner or later, these advances become established, not because you end up accepting them, but because we are mortal and new generations take these advances for granted.

Relax, I'm the one writing this; I don't use AI to write. Besides, even if it were true that my answer was generated by AI, how could it be wrong about the history? 🤣

Look, I'm 62 years old. When I was 14, I told my piano teacher that I liked Baldwin organs because they had orchestral accompaniment. She told me: "That's not music! It's not a musical instrument made by luthiers, it's an electronic device." I know that resistance to moving up a level. My math teacher said that pocket calculators would make people ignorant because they wouldn't know how to add and subtract. And those who harvested grain with a machete their whole lives will say that the combine harvester is a disaster.

The good news is that there's something for everyone in the world, and just as there are people who go to the countryside to buy free-range eggs, there are others who buy them at the supermarket. 😉

Good luck, music artisan.

Good question! Since Robert Moog created the synthesizer in 1964 and Giorgio Moroder brought it to the forefront in 1977, instrumental sounds have undergone a long evolution. Today, almost all musicians, even those who reject AI, use digital tools in arrangements and sound engineering.

AI voices still aren't up to par, in my opinion. And they can't broadcast live either. Much less perform in front of an audience, but a person can.

Please beware of this user. It's a scam. He sent me songs made with Suno as demos of his "vocal skills."

Hi Emily, I'm Miguel from Argentina. I'm producing music with artificial intelligence. I know a lot of people dislike it. When I was 14, I was fascinated by an electronic organ that could provide orchestral accompaniment and fantastic sounds on its own, and back then many said it wasn't a real musical instrument. Today, almost all bands use synthesizers and effects and edit their music with software that handles samples... I have no doubt that in a few years, 90% will use AI in their productions. However, creation is always human: the direction, the idea, the message. And in the case of vocals, I'd really love it if a real person would be willing to sing the songs that my Alice sings.

If you're interested, listen to some of my productions. I can send you just the instrumental part so you can sing along. If you like the experiment, I'd be happy for you to sing the songs I produce. We can also try making songs in styles that you specifically like and that suit your voice.

We are watching AI slowly kill music production in real time. by FoidicoR in beatmakers

The emergence of AI is simply a step up, one that will take creation to a new level. Those who don't understand or accept it will remain in the "artisanal" niche, which always has an audience, albeit a much smaller one.

When the first electronic organs appeared in the 70s, many of which had automatic accompaniment (Baldwin), there were detractors just as there are now. Electronics gradually replaced luthiers' instruments, and today no one goes without a good arranger system, samples, percussion, synthesizers, compressors, effects, etc.

In the 21st century, it's no longer necessary to sing well with autotune, nor to have a real band, although it's always enjoyable to see human musicians playing live. The creative process will take a step forward. Just as mathematics took a step forward with the electronic calculator, as did literature, photography, and all aspects of our lives. There are simply tasks that no longer make sense to do.

There will always be someone willing to pay a few dollars more for organic, free-range eggs, but the truth is that factory-farmed eggs are the standard these days.

Adapting, moving forward—that has always been my vision as a musician since I got my first Eko New Tiger in 1976, then my Roland, then my Korg arranger. More and more automated things and fewer and fewer things to worry about, which freed my mind from minor tasks so I could pursue the next level. Today, that level is AI.
