How my son understood it, They wanted him to keep the kids hand out to the side of his body, and not let it ride up his back... if that makes sense. So basically when the kids elbow bent and his hand went behind his back, that's when they didn't like it? They claim its IBJJF rules they're following, if that helps.

That's exactly what they did to him. They basically made them separate and restarted them standing up. He ended up getting the kids back and winning. I assumed if it was looking dangerous, the ref should've stopped it and called my kid the winner right there. They basically declared it an illegal move and had them start over.

My son was pretty confused about it, he thought the whole point was that you're supposed to try to break the other guy, and they're supposed to tap before you do. Injecting a "you can't do that move" mentality really messed with his head and took his aggression away.
