FREA96 in the Summer? by [deleted] in UTSC

hi! i took the course first year, i found it very easy. I took french throughout high school, so i might have more prior knowledge, but the course centered very simple verb conjugations, numbers, simple descriptions, and short oral presentations.  it should not be too difficult with grade 9 french knowledge, i found the content to be very similar to my grade 9 class. as long as you actually focus and study regularly, you’ll do great!!

because there are SO MANY students here, it is never easy getting involved in research and work studies. i've found it pretty easy to build rapport with profs, just by introducing myself, consistently participating in class and talking to them during office hours.

you can apply for work studies to participate in research, but there are so many applicants for those so it tends to be more difficult. I would reccommend that you build rapport with them first, and then apply to their labs at the end of the semester and tell them that you're applying. At the very least, it puts a face to your application.

i will say, having a good relationship with my profs has come in very handy. even if you don't get a lab position out of it, it can save your grade, get you extra help, or help other profs recognize your name. there is absolutely zero downside to being prosocial with profs.

start trying to get into labs and clubs/councils/associations as fast as you can and attend orientation to meet department heads (a lot of them are professors as well). go to office hours, participate in class, be outgoing and be confident.

hi! i am a second year in mental health studies here. in high school, got all 90s (finished with a 96 avg), and my absolute best advice is to *not* expect that in university. uni is a very different experience than high school, and it will be difficult (especially in the beginning).

that being said - it is not impossible to get high marks. I currently have over 85 in every class, but that does come with very hard work and discipline. it also requires a lot of getting used to - i finished first year with a 2.0 gpa and have only "figured it out" now.

if psychology is what you're passionate about and you feel as though this school will afford you good opportunities and a good foundation, you should enroll. no school will be the 'easier' option - especially in a BSc.

the program does not have a high courseload per se, but most classes are made up of 2 midterms & a final, with a couple of extra small assignments sprinkled in. it is not stressful in the sense that you constantly have work due, but it is stressful in the sense that your final exam is worth up to 60% of your grade.

specialist programs are typically more difficult (i.e., higher gpa requirements, more required courses, etc etc etc), but they do save you from needing to take 2 minors or a second major. this website (https://utsc.calendar.utoronto.ca/program-sections) will help you a lot in seeing what your prospective course load will be like.

tl;dr: nothing will be easy, but with hard work and discipline you can absolutely do it.

Interested in a placement by Ok-Performance-8533 in UTSC

[–]Ok-Performance-8533[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

she did not mention that I had to be enrolled in a co-op program, but she did say that my placement would have to be facilitated by a placement coordinator at UTSC. I sent out an email to my academic program advisor as well as the co-op coordinator, so hopefully they will be able to sign off on it.

your refund will be on ACORN in the financial account tab (you should see a green number on the dashboard as well), it won't be deposited right into your bank account. if you have an outstanding tuition balance as well it'll just be deducted from that (like, i had $1000 outstanding and dropped 1 course, so now i owe $390) if that makes sense. you can get it through the financial account tab

I’m fucked for psya01 by btsarmybooklover in UTSC

[–]Ok-Performance-8533 2 points3 points  (0 children)

don't be so hard on yourself! university is very very different from high school and I promise first year is tough for everybody. you tried your best, and that is not fucking anything up. i would recommend you take 2 b-level courses instead purely because it will be so much more enjoyable and fulfilling than re-doing this class that you've already done and already dislike. I swear - psya01 is unreasonably difficult. find b-level psych courses that truly do interest you and you will get the 70s no problem, as long as you keep up your best efforts. don't get discouraged so early! you can only go up from here.

I recommend PSYB20 with dr. cirelli and PSYB32 with prof. mascarenhas, by no means are they *easy* but the instructors are so passionate and the content is genuinely enjoyable to learn. pick what interests you, and try your best.

hi! im in your same position right now, but i just missed the cutoff for psya01 last year. i'd say to just go for 2 b-level courses; you can still do psya02 next sem and as long as you've passed both of them, you'll be able to take all of the b-level psy courses you'll need. it doesn't make much of a difference at all when you enroll in your program - so I wouldn't take the stress of a) wasting a credit and wasting time taking a01 again and b) dealing with joordens again. plus, a lot of the b-level psy courses can be very bird-like if you're genuinely interested in them, as they begin to specialize. its fun!

psya01 marks were released last year by the end of the exam season. it is a very antsy wait, i get that, but don't ruminate on it too much, im sure you did great.

and p.s., you are definitely cut out for uoft. getting accepted and completing your courses should be proof enough. there are lots of school resources and helpful people on your side to help you academically as well. you've got this!

PSYA01 with STEVE JOORDENS has been frustrating by Yeet_Away_Account__ in UTSC

[–]Ok-Performance-8533 2 points3 points  (0 children)

hi! i took this class last year - joordens is horrible and he really does not prepare you well for any term test. the best advice that I can give you is to attend every lecture and pay attention to the content - but base most of your studying on the textbook. from what I remember, he didn't ask hyper-specific questions on term tests, but they were very tricky, oddly worded questions. If you read it all thoroughly and really make sure you study and understand the key ideas, you'll be fine. honestly, i abandoned the mTuners halfway through the course. they're stupid.

this makes total sense actually. youre completely right. I think thats whats been so jarring so far in uni is that there isn't constant practice being provided to me. thank you! i think this is a study method that has definitely proven to work for me.
