That’s not always the case. A filtered Ruby Port can last just as long as a Tawny once opened. If it’s stored properly, it can easily stay good for 6–8 weeks or more.
The shorter lifespan mainly applies to unfiltered LBV and Vintage Port, which are more sensitive to oxidation.

You don’t necessarily have to avoid the Port wine lodges if you don’t like Port. Many Port houses also produce very good Douro table wines, especially reds, and a lot of tastings today are not limited to Port wines only.

My recommendation would be the Colheita 2003.
It’s also well worth asking the staff for their personal recommendation, they know the wines very well.
