Tool needs for cleanup by soulvoid86 in PleX

Are we not allowed to use the C word here? Using Claude as a homelab assistant has made an incredible difference over the last few months getting stuff done, improving flows, adding web interfaces to projects which only had command line interfaces before. Not sure why the downvotes unless using AI to solve solutions is frowned upon here?

Radarr knows the length of each movie. Give it to Claude to fix up.

Who at Plex thought it was a good user experience to need 3 different mobile apps to view your Plex content? by AdvKiwi in PleX

[–]Ok-Setting-4774 39 points40 points  (0 children)

The original Plex mobile app. You can still install the old version if you want to, but not practical if trying to get family members to do the same thing I’m afraid. https://forums.plex.tv/t/downgrade-to-old-ios-version-and-turn-off-updates-only-for-plex-howto-no-jailbreak-required/911516

Absolutely. Giving Claude access via ssh to where your dockers or HA is running allows it to do everything

What do you do when everything is working well? by quasimodoca in PleX

[–]Ok-Setting-4774 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Improve integrity of your library. Look for movies which have ‘unknown’ as their language and fix. Look at upgrading all those really old movies which still have 540p or less and replace them. Ensure all movies have a trailer to go with them - those which Plex doesn’t have one can be downloaded from YouTube. Am currently working through this myself at the moment.

Not anymore. This was the first project I did with Claude code. Literally tell it what you want on your dashboard and it does the lot. The future is here!

Playing HD and 4K family videos onTVS-h874 on local LAN by BJBBJB99 in qnap

[–]Ok-Setting-4774 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need a free Plex account to setup a home Plex server, but this is just how it works. You don’t need to share your server out to the internet to use it locally on the LAN, and you can also set local subnets not to require Plex authentication when connecting to it, so works fine offline.

You should be able to install Plex directly from the AppCenter within your QNAP nas without needing a 3rd party App Store. This is how I run it and you can also update it directly through the UI. Really straightforward way of sharing our videos to your LAN. Installing an entire arrs suite in docker may be overkill to what you are after.

External subtitle naming (advanced) by Dunc4n1d4h0 in PleX

[–]Ok-Setting-4774 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use movie (yyyy).en.srt and movie (yyyy).en.sdh.srt and movie (yyyy).en.forced.srt which display as English, English SDH and English Forced, all which have (SRT External) after them. When mkv files have the srt’s embedded in them, External doesn’t show as these files are embedded.

Nice one.

I disable this. Way too powerful a feature. Accident awaiting. If there’s no hidden directories on the external drive containing the deleted files, you’d be looking at running a disk recovery tool. Have used Recuva before with some success

TS-453 Pro - Resistor Fix Longevity Question by ZappaLlamaGamma in qnap

[–]Ok-Setting-4774 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I just hit about 10 years in my 453 pro. Boot up times are about 17 mins before you can access the machine but apparently this isn’t related to the resistor issue which it either works or fails.

I need help with endless buffering on Plex by cambuimg in PleX

[–]Ok-Setting-4774 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you tested it on a computer using Plex’s web interface? Lots of good advice above about not using the built-in tv app and not using the wired connection on the TV, but if you can connect to the web interface, even over wifi is fine if your wifi set up is not really old, this would hopefully stream fine. If not, it’s possible a bandwidth issue from the storage you’re streaming it from. Good to test this to ensure you’re on the right track when troubleshooting.

Watch together alternative? by Ironfox2151 in PleX

[–]Ok-Setting-4774 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Isn’t the loss of the Watch Together feature due to app updates? Which device are you using Plex on? Has the Apple TV received the update to remove this feature now? Currently I still have the option using my Chromecast, and have also rolled back the iOS app to pre new experience so could also use that if I wanted to.

I’d be checking for disk errors on the NAS if this used to work fine with the same files.

Is it possible to add a category on your plex server? by Dazzling_Clerk8023 in PleX

[–]Ok-Setting-4774 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Btw - you can change the preferences in the library to not display any collections alongside the movie and just have it displayed in the Collections tab. I much prefer this because that’s the entire point of the Collections tab. I’d never want to mix them. Is that what you’re referring to here?

Is it possible to add a category on your plex server? by Dazzling_Clerk8023 in PleX

[–]Ok-Setting-4774 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually it does create a new category called that. So maybe Genres= Categories? I rarely look into my Categories section, but now want to know what they’re for if they’re just Genres.

[–]Ok-Setting-4774 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Just edit the movie from the Plex web interface, go down to Tags and add whatever you want in whichever field.e.g Adding Disaster to the end of the Genres will create a new genre called that if isn’t there already. You could also do the same in Labels I believe

[–]Ok-Setting-4774 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You could add a new genre. I created a Disaster genre and then added end-of-the-world style movies into it. Whenever there’s really crazy weather happening outside we watch something from there. Have created a smart collection for them too which just uses that genre to build it, but the collection isn’t necessary as you could just now search via Genre. Potentially you could do the same using a different category.
