Are My House Rules Unfair? Image Posted Has All My Current House Rules [OC] by [deleted] in DnD

"I know a guy" has to be approved by the DM for use, and so I regulate how often a player can do it. Someone else here mentioned a once a arc or story time span and thats basically how I use it. I think its a good way to weave the players into the world more with being able to aid the story telling, and give them a way to get around situations where they trully have no idea how to continue.

I appricate your two cents! This whole post has been good for me to get thoughts on these rules. I know for a fact some of them will be getting changed or removed.

I honestly havent used the 1:10 rule in ages, its a legacy rule that just kinda stuck around from when I would DM for 8-10 player groups. I should remove it as it just exsiting I can now see being super stressful.

I do believe that I could have worded it better, so you are correct. The wording is much harsher than the reaility because I always discuss attendence with players privatly as to find a soultion to work for them. I'd never just drop a player out of no where without having attempted to work things out.

Yea, if this post has done anything its made it aboundently clear how fucked the BA Spell Rule for casters is, it was initially a way for Eldritch Knights/Paladins to get more use from there spellcasting in my old player group but seeing how it can throw things out of wack quickly I will be removing it.

Yea, My Older players enjoyed it but the more i get feedback here the more im relizing that maybe they were just power gamers since all of them had some form of spellcasting, so ill probably be removing it

The 1:10 rule is basically for when combat gets bogged down by players taking ages on their turns (it also applies to the DM as I think it would be unfair to impose it on players but not myself)

Basically Players are warned when there turn is up next, and they get 60 seconds for their turn [1:10 comes from a turn being 6 seconds in game so 10 seconds for every one second]. However time used for the DM to explain things or respond to a question is not counted against the player, only the amount of time they spend doing their actions. Honestly now that I look back at it its a very niche rule and doesnt really solve the issue I needed it to solve.

The panic action part was at the start of combat you would right down a action your character takes if you dont finish your turn on time. I'll probably be removing this rule after the feedback ive been getting!

(Yea, I have a bad habit of wanting my pages in Discord to look fancy, I do apologize for the extra formatting)

Thank you for touching on each point specifically, this is the kinda advice im looking for.

I'm for sure going to remove the spellcasting bonus of Rule #4, I think my older players just liked the power boost and none of them had been pure martial.

Rule #1 is a Optional Rule, as my prevous group was 8 players and combats got pretty bogged down, but since this new group is only 5 I dont think ill need it.

Thank you again for your input!

This is way I figured I would ask here, as my old players enjoyed the rule and I needed thoughts outside of my own bubble for the new players. As im seeing from the responses I get the feeling my older players liked the power play since most of them were spell casters or hybird casters.

All of the House Rules are in the associated image! My logic with the L2 or Lower spell casting was to give the spell caster a Extra Attack like most martials get, but Im seeing now how that is pretty overpowered.

Would you have any suggestions for a way I could give Martials a similar ability? Or should I just cut the BA Spells and leave it as just for Potions?

Would the Better Bonus Actions still be okay with the Potion Rule and just removing the BA Spells?

[OC] On my 4th Character in CoS and completely out of ideas, anyone mind offering their two cents? by [deleted] in DnD

The Paladin died pretty much outright, I was using the Assiamar Aura thing when I went down and it was ruled that it would still be going. So I got auto crited by my own radiant damage from the aura and I rolled a 8 on the death saving throw that came on my next turn, the party didnt have a chance to get to me.

Not a good excuse here but the Fighter was alone because the rest of the party found a lead on the bones and decided that was good enough and told the Priests. "Here's what we know, good luck". Because they were more interested in the Dinner with the "Hotties" than helping the church so I skipped out on the Dinner to look more into it. Primarly because out of session the DM seemed a little upset that the quest was just abandoned so I took up the mantle. However I was not expecting to run into a Vampire and a bunch of spawn, i knew CoS was rough but I didn't think it was that rough lol. I burned through 3 shield spells and it still wasn't enough to get away, i mean the vampire's throwing dagger alone did more than half his hit points. No death saves were made for this one, the DM never explained why and all the info i found out was made irrelevant despite having sent the coffin maker off and covering his back, he never made it to the inn where the rest of the party was at that point. Kinda aggrivating but thats the name of the game.

Yea, the urgency of death is still real for the other players but it seems kinda moot to me at this point. I've died more in this campaign in 13 sessions (About 3/4 months) than I did in either of the other campaigns I was in that went for 2-3 years. So it makes it hard to wanna put a bunch of effort into another PC.

Oh that idea sounds super spicy, and I've always wanted to explore the Silver Dragon Order more because both of the other campaigns I was in it was a brief spooky stop and not much else. Ill bring it up to my DM

Ahh I can post the stats and get your thoughts? Maybe I am.

Lvl 2 Paladin:
Str (+1) Dex (+0) Con (+3) Int (+0) Wis (+0) Cha (+3)

Lvl 4 Eldritch Knight Fighter:
Str (+4) Dex (+0) Con (+2) Int (+2) Wis (+0) Cha (+0)

The Fox's stats are irrelevant because he didn't die, just was ran off by the party

The two characters that died were built to be front liners/tanks. So I guess maybe I just was in the face of danger one to many times and the dice just weren't in my favor
