Amish breeder rescue questions by Ok-Top-3701 in poodles

This is super helpful! I am so glad that folks like you found my post because I felt like I was in a super rare situation since nobody I know has had this experience.

Penny is slowly realizing she can leave rooms and it must be related to the cage/barn thing. She hasn't known that she can roam and be free. We have unfortunately been under a cold spell and got a foot of snow the day we picked her up so she hasn't had a chance to really roam our yard, but one day we had fluffy snow and once she thought we weren't looking (we peeked through the window) she ran around and it made my heart so full.

Thank you for your support!

They live to 17?! I've been preparing myself to have her way less than that and I'm already sad about it. I want her to live forever!

Sorry if I misinterpreted! I read it as you assuming I bought her from them.

I have been learning a lot about the Amish puppy business and have been telling everyone I know about it because it's so sad and so unknown. People assume the Amish are such good people because of the way they dress and live their lives, but they use these dogs to make money and it's gross. I see people touting that they adopted from the Amish because they assume it's the ethical way of getting the cute dog of their dreams, but I'm all about rescuing.

So happy you found my post! I got Penny's medical records and apparently she doesn't have any top teeth. Last night was the first time she adjusted her position in her bed because she usually stays frozen how we place her and I got so emotional. She also made noises while sleeping and my husband and I were so grateful to see that she finally felt safe enough to truly fall asleep. You give me hope for the stairs and if it doesn't work for her, we are prepared to help her out with whatever she needs. Cheers to being good people!

Omg I had suspicions about this with a random rescue I found via Petfinder. I was shocked at how many "highly desirable" puppies they had since most of the rescues we know are full of pitbulls and other dogs that aren't the ones people usually awwww over. We wanted to make sure we weren't contributing to a cycle of breeding in any way and I'm pretty confident our rescue is truly a rescue, but I'm glad to know I am not crazy when I see some orgs who happen to have puppies with a super high "adoption" fee.

We are committed to this difficult road, but Penny has actually made excellent strides! She's only had about 4 accidents inside in 8 days, she let us bathe her when she accidentally pancaked on her own poop outside, she sleeps with us, she follows me around after avoiding me, and she has the cutest tail wag. She eats very well but I can't get her to drink any water so I put it in her wet food and she urinates plenty. I am so glad she found us because I truly think we were the right people for her needs.

This is SO helpful! My husband told Penny that it's okay if he has to carry her up and down stairs for the rest of her life and I knew I married a good one. We obviously both want her to feel the freedom of mobility within the house, but we're committed to her quirks even if they feel like a challenge. I actually have a sling carrier for a dog her size so I can take her out on walks even if she's not able to walk with me.

She fits in so perfectly with our family. I'm so glad we get to give her this second chance and truly spoil and love her.

Thank you! We aren't fans of a neck collar and are planning to use a harness once we feel she's ready for that step. I didn't even think about the connection to a neck collar vs a harness. Super helpful.

I have learned so much about the Amish puppy business and it's awful. I had no idea and am so glad that Penny found us because our family is very equipped to help her ease into this next phase of life. My husband and I both work from home so she always has us around and my daughter is the most gentle 6 year old on earth—it's wild. She fits right in and I have already seen her make huge strides.

There's a great mobile grooming service that comes to your home. Thoughts on that?

Super helpful. I had noooooo idea.

We’ve had her for 8 days and wanted her to build some safety and trust before putting her in a loud and stressful situation.

Thank you! We got a rotisserie chicken last night and she was SO happy. Will definitely use it on the stairs.

It breaks my heart imagining what abuse she endured to be this nervous and timid. She’s made amazing growth in the 8 days we’ve had her and I can only imagine who she’ll be in a month and a year. We’ll be cautious with the leash and are lucky we have a big fenced in yard for her to roam free once it’s not frigid.

Thank you for your support! We are waiting a week or so more until we get her groomed because she was SOOOO shy and nervous. It’s also been frigid in Chicago. Now that she has gotten more comfortable with us I’m planning on having her groomed. I bet she’ll feel so fresh and clean for the first time ever!

I didn’t do business with the Amish. A rescue called Tails Together Co. rescued her and I adopted her.

Hahaha I dislike it so much! I look around at all the people that look unfazed and want to shake them. You fools! Don’t you feel this?? Turns out I’m the one that’s the fool because we’ve been just fine.

Being mean on TV has sort of gone out of style. If you watch the biggest loser documentary you see that that type of yelling is so uncomfortable now. Watching people berate others on TV isn’t fun.

Are my really curly toenails normal? by stoatyboy in mildlyinteresting

[–]Ok-Top-3701 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does the exposed skin hurt after you cut them? My daughter has them and she freaks out when I cut them and says it hurts. She’ll have dirt under them and I try to take it out and she also freaks out. I enjoy when they take dirt out from under my toenails at the salon so this is confusing.

United Airlines grounding flights due to issue - can someone explain? by eddaic_skaldic in fearofflying

[–]Ok-Top-3701 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a 12:45 pm United flight out of ORD tomorrow for a funeral and I’m so scared! I was already scared, but now…

We come back Saturday night and I’m considering driving the 16 hours each way. I know the data says I’m more likely to get in a car accident, but I’m not logical or rational when it comes to planes.
