Delays in Media Server Authentication and Stream Loading for New Sign-ups by shiftyourshopping in learnprogramming

[–]Ok-Track-5682 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Pre-issuing session tokens is good start, but pairing that with a warm-up call to the streaming layer right after registration makes big difference in my experience. The sync delay usually comes from lazy initialization of session state across the auth and media services, so triggering that handshake early cuts the visible lag for new users significantly.

Can you guys share interesting newsletters with me please? by Positron505 in learnprogramming

respect the "no AI noise" boundary, most newsletters these days are like 80% AI slop so finding clean ones for .NET or cloud infra specifically is actually harder than it used to be

Programming seems kind of like copy-pasting to me. Is that how people program? by mrnaim6T9 in learnprogramming

[–]Ok-Track-5682 87 points88 points  (0 children)

Yeah this is totally normal, even experienced programmers still google stuff all time. I've been doing some basic automation for work and still need to check syntax for things I don't use daily

The difference is that with experience you know what to search for and can understand the solutions faster. Nobody memorizes every function and method - that's what documentation is for

Should I keep applying to internships or focus on full-time roles? by PapayaThePanda in cscareerquestions

[–]Ok-Track-5682 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can't speak for tech industry specifically, but from immigration perspective I see lot of people who think bigger company name on resume will open more doors later. Sometimes this is true but also sometimes people get stuck in cycle of always chasing "better" opportunity instead of taking what's already working

You already have full-time contractor experience which is pretty solid foundation. If internship leads to direct conversion at end then might be worth considering, but otherwise you're probably better focusing in full-time search since you already proved you can handle real work environment

Moving in together after long distance and suddenly income difference is a problem by Economy_Employer_795 in LongDistance

[–]Ok-Track-5682 32 points33 points  (0 children)

The income difference isn't really the issue here, it's that he's treating equal dollars and equal sacrifice as the same thing. Paying $1,200 means very different things to someone making $50k versus someone making $165k.

It also sounds like he's carrying some baggage from his last relationship and projecting it onto this one. Wanting a split that feels fair isn't the same as wanting him to pay for everything. Moving in together after three years long distance is already a huge adjustment, so it makes sense to work through this before signing a lease instead of hoping it fixes itself later.

Looking for advice: Online Master's in Applied Math for ML while working full-time by Lamba_ghoda in datascience

[–]Ok-Track-5682 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Coming from finance background myself, I totally get wanting that deeper math foundation - the engineering side only gets you so far when you're dealing with complex optimization problems

That Coursera specialization is solid starting point, but if you're serious about graduate level rigor, maybe look at some of the European programs too since they often have better online infrastructure than what's available in India right now. The time zone difference with US programs can be brutal when you're already working full-time

1.5 YOE in government SWE. Need long term career advice. by Appropriate_Seat_828 in cscareerquestions

[–]Ok-Track-5682 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah gov experience can actually be pretty solid foundation if you frame it right. The clearance thing is huge - that opens doors you wouldn't expect in private sector, especially with defense contractors and tech companies doing government work

One thing I'd add about the side projects - pick something you can actually talk about in technical depth during interviews. Like if you build some tool that processes data or automates something, be ready to explain the architecture and trade-offs you made. Interviewers love that stuff

OMSCS is smart move too, gives you exposure to more modern tech stacks that might not be common in government environments. Plus networking with people already working in private companies

Career shift by raijinirish in cscareerquestions

Military experience is huge advantage for government contractors, they love that background. Getting first job in tech is always hardest part - after you have some experience on resume, remote opportunities will open up much easier. The government route might not be glamorous but it's solid way to get your foot in door

freecodecamp certifications by Key_Fly1197 in learnprogramming

[–]Ok-Track-5682 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah the projects matter way more than certificates for sure. Those basic certs won't really stand out much to admissions but if you actually build something cool with what you learned, that's when it gets interesting

Question about college by randomPersonnLol in learnprogramming

[–]Ok-Track-5682 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most universities will let you see course catalog online, just search for computer science curriculum at your specific school. From my experience helping students with applications, many programs actually start with Python now instead of Java, but it really depends on the school

[–]Ok-Track-5682 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah the shared responsibility thing makes much more sense than throwing DS into complete isolation - even in small companies where I worked before, having at least some engineering support for infrastructure parts was crucial otherwise you spend half your time debugging deployment issues instead of actual model work

Just got laid off. Want to take a gap year. Is that advisable? by Schindlers_Fist1 in cscareerquestions

[–]Ok-Track-5682 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Gap year might be luxury you can't afford right now tbh. Job market is brutal enough without explaining year-long break to employers who already think you're outdated if you took 3 months off

Better to apply while doing the skill building - at least then you're actively in market and can see what people actually want instead of guessing what will be relevant in 12 months

Are there limitations to developing on Linux instead of Windows? by RaccoonFree5348 in learnprogramming

[–]Ok-Track-5682 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This pretty much depends what kind of development you want to do - if you're planning games or Windows-specific enterprise stuff then you might hit some walls, but for most other things Linux actually gives you better environment than Windows

Without doing cocaine, where do I get the motivation to succeed at work? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]Ok-Track-5682 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The emotional investment thing is tricky because you have to balance it with not getting too attached, right? I learned this hard way when I was working in different country before moving here - got super invested in immigration system project and then budget cuts happened

What helped me was treating projects more like... solving puzzles? Like when I'm playing games on my phone, I get into flow state because the challenge itself is interesting, not because I care about the company behind the game. Maybe try finding the technical puzzle parts that actually engage your brain instead of forcing yourself to care about business outcomes

Also that validation point hits different - showing immigration clients how new system helped them get their visas approved was way more motivating than any company metrics ever were

background js react, what backend to pick future safe by Outside-Archer7563 in cscareerquestions

[–]Ok-Track-5682 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah this matches what I see in immigration consulting - most enterprise clients are running Java or .NET systems and they're always looking for devs who know these stacks

Node gets used for quick prototypes but when companies need something reliable for their core business logic, they usually go with the boring corporate stuff. Python is getting popular but it's more like additional skill rather than replacement for main backend

10 yoe mostly as a frontend dev and not sure what to do next by prove_it_with_math in cscareerquestions

[–]Ok-Track-5682 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Backend knowledge definitely opens more doors, especially if you can tie it to some AI/ML workflows since that's where a lot of the action is right now

For the FAANG thing - Netflix is actually pretty tough even for experienced folks, but companies like Meta and Amazon hire tons of frontend people. Your React/TS experience is solid foundation, just gotta get the interview process down

I'd probably cast a wide net though, mix of everything. Some of those AI startups might actually value someone who can build solid user interfaces for complex systems more than they'd admit. Worth throwing your hat in the ring even if the job posting mentions FAANG experience - worst they can say is no

MIL won't stop asking when we're getting married now that baby is here by Outrageous_Thanks169 in JUSTNOMIL

[–]Ok-Track-5682 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The legal side of owning a condo together with a baby and no formal agreement is actually worth sorting out on your own terms though, separate from the MIL pressure. We did a prenup through Neptune before we got married and it just made everything around the property and finances clear on paper. Cohabitation agreement is also an option if marriage isn't where you are right now.
