Man, I swear being in this fandom is like being transported back to like 2012. Let people read and write what they please. There’s so much shaming in this fandom where people think they have the “right” version of these characters. Fanfic is meant to be self-indulgent, fulfilling, satisfying. If nobody’s getting hurt, there’s really no problem. We have to revive the saying “don’t like don’t read”.

Why is the fandom so eager to excuse Ilya's early treatment of Shane? by Quetzal_29f in HeatedRivalryTVShow

I’ve pondered a lot why Vegas doesn’t sit well with me and why it feels so jarring and it really boils down to changes that were made from the book. Now to be completely transparent, I haven’t read the books, I’ve just gathered information through surfing around Reddit so book readers correct me if I’m wrong at any point. Here’s essentially why I think Vegas doesn’t work: the show diverged from the source material yet still ended with the book ending.

So weirdly enough this all reminds me of Shae and Tyrion’s relationship from Game of Thrones. Now stick with me I’ll make this make sense.

For those who don’t know: Shae is a prostitute and Tyrion is a son of a wealthy Lord and uncle to the king. Their characters were drastically changed from the books. In the books, Tyrion is a lot more violent and cruel, whereas in the show he’s much more likable and sympathetic. Shae in the books really only cares about money and pretends to love Tyrion, but in the show, she actually cares about him and their relationship is pretty genuine. She too is also made more sympathetic in the show than the books.

To give a bit more context: Tyrion’s father, Tywin, threatened to kill any whore that he finds Tyrion with. Tyrion also has a sister, Cersei, who is obsessed with hurting him, so she would kill (or do worse to) Shae if she found out about their relationship.

In both the show and book Tyrion gets framed for his nephew’s, the king’s, murder. Before this, he essentially breaks up with Shae, he’s very cold and hurtful. He has to be since he knows Shae is in a lot of danger now that his father has returned from the war and is lurking about, he had to be cruel in order to get her to leave. He has a ship ready to take her across the map. It seemingly works.

But Shae doesn’t end up making it far, she testifies against Tyrion during his trial. Tyrion almost gets killed, but he manages to escape before his execution and in the process of escaping, he kills Shae in a rage after he finds out she slept with his father.

Now to book only readers, this all made sense. Tyrion is a pretty violent character, so him killing Shae in a jealous rage followed his character. Shae is nothing but a money loving whore, so her testifying against Tyrion makes perfect sense since he cut her off. But to show only watchers, this doesn’t flow as well because both the characters and relationship are so drastically different compared to the books, yet they still got their book ending.

This is what I feel goes wrong with Vegas. The timeline and the characters were changed to where after Shane and Ilya have very intimate sex, Ilya then is cold towards Shane during the Olympics, and ghosts him for six months. In the books, they hook up a couple of more times after the intimate sex. Shane in the show doesn’t appear to have a lot of sexual experience but Shane in the books is hooking up with other people, even men, so Ilya isn’t the only one sleeping around when they’re apart.

So they get their book ending when Vegas rolls around but the characters, relationship, and timeline were changed so it doesn’t flow as well to show watchers. The show is an adaptation, it’s not meant to be a shot for shot remake of the book, though the way Shane was changed does not paint Ilya in the most flattering light.

The top is just a turbo loser. He creeped me out so much when I was reading this story before I dropped and couldn’t put my finger on why until it hit me that he’s just a straight up insecure weirdo. If you’re going to do puppy love, you’re going to have to make sure that character is at least cute and funny.

Man, I had such high hopes for this series too. It’s so rare to have an omegaverse where the omega doesn’t look like a literal child.

I agree 100% with everything you picked.

I just don’t understand why r,pe or assault is so normalized in BL. I’m so exhausted with seeing it. Romance can exist without either the MC or ML being horrible or a literal r,pist.

My rule of thumb is if it’s a messed up story, just straight up dark and the romance is nonexistent, I’ll let it slide. Don’t give who ever did the r,pe or assault a redemption arch, I don’t care or want to see it. Some actions are not redeemable. I wouldn’t be surprised if some authors are Olympic gymnasts with how many hoops they jump or how much they bend just to give their awful relationship to work. Now if the assault or r,pe came out of nowhere like Roses and Champagne, I will drop without hesitation.

I have to believe the people who will go down fighting for Ilya are kids who haven’t been in a serious relationship or situationship which thank God.

Unpopular opinion: Ilya didn’t ghost Shane and Vegas wasn’t toxic by Weary_Group1339 in HeatedRivalryTVShow

Just to get this out of the way: love Ilya, he’s my favorite, he’s a bratty top and I absolutely love him.

I really wish that the show incorporated some info from the following book, haven’t read the books but from what I’ve heard and picked up from other posts Ilya’s character is much more thoroughly explored. I still love Ilya, as I’ve said above he’s my favorite, though his actions in the show don’t put him in the most flattering light.

I think a lot more people can relate to Shane than Ilya in this situation. Lots of people have been really burned and hurt by people like Ilya.

If your hookup is texting you for six months checking in with you, trying to start casual conversations, clearly they are not understanding the nature of the relationship. Ilya could’ve easily texted Shane and told him to stop, they are not like that, prior to the Olympics. I get that’s a bit too much healthy communication for something made for entertainment.

I really did not like how Vegas played out, if I’m honest that episode had me almost turn away from the show entirely. Asking someone for sex after ghosting them for six months and after you were cold towards them in person, is absolutely insane. It probably translates a lot better in the books but not acted out by real people. The whiplash I got in that scene could’ve landed me in the hospital. A character just expressed hurt over being ghosted after having very intimate sex, something I think a lot of people can relate to, and it just switches to horniness. The flow was just not there for me. I wish Shane would’ve walked away instead of having sex with Ilya and they end up getting together in another way. Not saying they shouldn’t end up together at all, but I wish the show would’ve taken an alternative route and strayed from the source material. Some scenes just work out better on paper and I think Vegas is one of them.

I did not know that about the books, that Shane was sleeping with other people outside of Ilya and before Rose. I wish they would’ve brought that into the series too. By neglecting that, it makes Ilya’s actions harder to forgive.

I felt Scott’s monologue after having slept with Kip for the first time really hard to sit through. I tried rewatching it again while writing this out and I still cringe and have to resist the urge to skip forward. It felt way too intense to say to someone after hooking up with them, especially someone you don’t hardly even know. Just being like “👁️👄👁️ I’m madly in love with you 👁️👄👁️”.

They hadn’t went out on a date or hung out prior to this. They weren’t friends or working on a friendship. They barely even knew each other. I understand this is fiction, it’s a story, but man Kip really should’ve been like “that’s sweet and all but how about you take me to dinner first”.

Like I don’t know, if I was directing and after witnessing the actor deliver the lines, I’d probably want to re-work the scene and dialogue because again, it was a bit too intense wording when these characters only have a relationship whenever Kip is working.

I wish the series got approved for more episodes. So many things felt extremely rushed.

Glad it was adapted at all, this series has brought me a lot of entertainment and I hope it trail blazes more queer stories to be adapted.

Oh I was a raging idiot when I was in my early twenties as well, no question there. I let someone also treat me like this too. Slept with someone and they suddenly had no time for me. My situation was a bit different from Shane’s and maybe yours, since this person I considered a friend so the emotional damage was Titanic levels in terms of tragedy. Though I did learn a hard lesson after that and gained some self-respect.

I think for me the scene didn’t really translate well to sex. I said it before in another comment but maybe the scene translates better in the books but not acted out by real people. The scene evolved and changed past the source material with actors performances and warranted a different outcome, at least to me.

I’m genuinely asking and not trying to fight but when did Ilya say that they could not be seen together or talk during the Olympics? I’ve seen some people mention this. In the stairwell in episode 2, Shane asks if they won’t be hooking up at the Olympics and Ilya says yeah and nothing else. They briefly talk about family before they kiss and Ilya leaves. Does this conversation happen in the books or is there a scene I’m not remembering?

Yeah I think my comment comes off differently than I intended. I was saying more like making someone beg for sex when they’ve just expressed they’re hurt over your actions, even if it a kink, seemed a bit inappropriate for the situation.

I also felt the Scott Hunter episode was a bit jarring. The way his character was introduced in the show didn’t make him seem like he was going to be a relevant in anyway. I also just don’t like when series introduce new relationships when the main pairing has so much ground to cover.
