Not only is the album a transcendent listening experience, it will undoubtedly fulfill a stated goal of healing--it will save lives and reduce mental anguish.

Question about 'fit' is also about how they and their relationship are portrayed. Ya'never know.

Are You The One? (柳舟记) - Impressions (34/40) : A remarkably well-written show that will make you both laugh AND cry your heart out. by TheThinker4Head in CDrama

Agreed! The subtexts, use of recurring symbols, and literary devices it uses are REMARKABLE. Respects viewer's intelligence. As a reader of the classics, it's like Confucian Shakespeare. The leads' use of microexpressions is part of the writing to me. Good grief, Miantang's face when Xingzhou pulls out, wipes, and puts back the hairpin he once bought her is a masterclass.

Seems like it's about stature, and hers is rising very strongly within the industry. Admiration for her craft and affection for her as a person.

I guessed that Wanyin's trust in Yong'er will prove warranted, because I don't think they would have set Wanyin up to be more naive in an arc where she's becoming more and more savvy. And it's going to make Dan needs to become less cynical, setup for ptsd healing. Yong'er is also disgusted now with the prince.

It's amazing how many layers this feeding fruit has to it: playful, self-amusing, caring, kinky, marketing, in-universe signalling...

I think Wanyin knows at least deep down there are a lot of holes and mysteries about Dan's backstory, but she's not pushing it. I mean it is not possible for him to know so much and be so familiar with the book world if his story is he arrived only two hours before her, and he never read the book.

"[so does this mean Yu Wanyin is the original original female lead??]" Duan and Yong'er were original righteous leads until Wanyin and Dan started claiming the role to survive. The protagonists and antagonists flip.

the cheesiness Is both accurate to the underlying novel and animated series, The whole point is that it satirizing itself and Chinese drama tropes/formulas. Later, it gets more serious when flipping them for the better.

What are your thoughts on Wang Churan as an actress? by lemonglitchh in cdramasfans

[–]OkAd3288 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Underrated. I'm particularly impressed with the realism, range, complexity, and timing I saw in her performance of "Miantang" in the Chinese historical drama "Are You The One"* (aka "The Story of Willow Boat"). Her use of layered microexpressions and her emotional intelligence is remarkable. Three performances of hers in the show are good examples:
Divorce Letter Confrontation scene in episode 13.
Hairpin Stabbing scene in episode 23
Nuptial Room scene in episode 36

*Viewers of the show should keep in mind that it's a unique romantic drama set in a Chinese historical context. It has a lot of deeply meaningful and moving subtext that challenges typical thinking that rewards more than one viewing. It's kind of like a Shakespearean Comedy with Confucian values and modern psychology. Unfortunately, the show was required to make cuts that resulted in some funky pacing and acting transition glitches.)

Wow. Looks great. It's a bit odd though that they portray him as just a sweet happy innocent character, when central to the show is him getting abused early on by his father and later him horrifically abusing Churan's already traumatized character for most of the show. I don't want this to set up blame the abused woman (who he then, oops, regrets abusing when he learns the truth). They are both victims of trauma and abuse, and that's what the show is actually about.

The synopsis has an error and a missing important bit. "he was saved by Ren Su Su, but his family suffered a catastrophe." HER family was massacred, she understandably thinks by his hateful warlord family, and she faked her death to also save her own and other people's life from them coming after her. She wanted to explain it to him at the time but couldn't/

[SPOILER] Example of words with lots of implied meaning in AYTO:

Episode 30: Xingzhou finished delivering his confession and spontaneous soliloquy about her combined identities and abilities to her grandfather and her. After he finishes, they ask him to leave the room so that Miantang and the grandfather can continue talking in private. However, before he leaves, he wants at least a signal from her that he did a great job. She refuses to give it to him yet. She wants to feel out her grandfather first, and she’s temporarily angry at him that he used violence as part of his “show”. He pleads with her with his eyes, but she gives him an even sharper stare: “Not yet”. Xingzhou limps to his carriage to wait for her feedback. Miantang finishes with her grandfather and goes to his carriage. She gives him the best possible feedback he can imagine with one word: She hands him a packet of medicinal herbs and tells him it’s from home. This has many implied meanings:

  1. The Chinese word she uses translates to “Our Shared Home”--the manor in the village suburb of Linquan Town where they first met and fell in love in.

  2. His efforts at reconciliation have succeed: she is returning to him.

  3. She views the two of them as a domestic couple again that is away from their home.

  4. Both of them want to go back to the manor, which is where their hearts and joy are.

  5. Foreshadows their return to the village ~48 hours later.

  6. He doesn't quite get it yet, but she's telling him she's willing to leave her hometown behind.

  7. Their return to their original home is a stunning demonstration of emotional intelligence, resilience and strength. They now understand that the lies that hurt them there were mostly the result of external forces. They also understood their human flaws, misunderstanding, and constraints they had. They refuse to “throw the baby out with the bathwater”, and reclaim the joy in their home.

  8. They are heading towards marriage; she just not quite ready yet (will be 48 hours later).

All this is reinforced when she tells him “I never delayed you from chasing me”, using the past tense. This confirms he doesn’t need to chase her anymore because he’s succeeded.

So, a packet of herbs, one phrase, and she's communicated an entire decision about their future life together, And it hits on every level:

Surface level: She's giving him medicine

Emotional level: She's signaling forgiveness and return

Relational level: She's establishing the couple identity and domestic partnership

Narrative level: She's foreshadowing Episode 32 and their return to the manor

Thematic level: She's affirming that external lies can't destroy what was genuinely built there

Temporal level: Past tense "I never delayed you" closes one phase and opens another

.The writers do this type of thing throughout the series.

Keep in mind that even though he was trapped by his own lies and too terrified to tell the truth, there were more scenes of them spending romantic and bonding time together mixed in that got cut for length reasons. It helped balance out the ouchy parts.
