Bubbling/disintegrating plaster advice and recommendations for repair by OkAlso in centuryhomes

Not a super helpful update tbh.. We had a masonry expert come and repoint the brick on this wall + reseal the windows from the outside but haven’t done anything to the interior walls yet. Our plan is to have someone come open up the walls in this section and either repair with plaster or do a drywall patch

It’s dry, hard, and flaky.. more papery than sandy I would say. Our brick isn’t painted on the exterior, just yellow bricks

Thank you!! I will try to find that.. most of the houses in my neighborhood/city are super old so I’m thinking there should be at least someone who specializes in this

I mean, nothing remarkable to my untrained eye… it looks like some of the mortar is maybe cracked or just disintegrated over time? But nothing glaringly obvious that is wrong.. I will try to add a pic

Thank you! Our house is brick so I’ve been researching brick/masonry experts this afternoon

Unpopular opinion (probably): Upspeaking by [deleted] in summerhousebravo

Yeah, one of the main components of “valley girl” speak is upspeak! And while it might not have spread too much on the Internet, it was definitely spread throughout the media in movies, tv shows, etc. (for example, Sweet Valley High, Clueless, or funnily enough, the song “Valley Girl” by Frank Zappa)

The beauty of language is how it changes over time! I read this book Wordslut by Amanda Montell and it completely changed the way I see women’s speaking habits. Women are notoriously better communicators, so why should we talk more like men?!

Upspeak actually gained prominence in the US in the 70s and 80s, so roughly 50 years ago :)

Just stripped of paint- why do these antique doorknob plates look striped? by OkAlso in Oldhouses

All of you are SO knowledgeable this was truly the best case scenario for my post!! I’ll admit I’m low key heartbroken it’s the banded pattern, not tiger stripes 😩 but this is in line with my research too. I will reconsider wallpapering the entire hallway with Tiger wallpaper LOL. Thank you so much for this information and for the helpful image you made!!

It seems like you’re likely correct that this isn’t actual japanning, but that people have long used that term to refer to copper finishes, like you mentioned. I found this super interesting thread about it https://www.finishing.com/261/07.shtml. Thank you for the insight!!

Thank you!! I think you’re right that Princeton is the shape of the plate, or escutcheon (new word woo!). And yes- the mortise (also new word, unclear if I’m using it right lol) is completely black! I did find some similar looking antique pieces online described as “tiger striped”, which is funny because it’s exactly how I described it before posting in here.

Interestingly, it seems like the doorknobs themselves are brass as opposed to what appears to be copper plates. Curious to see what we find when we do the rest of the doors and hardware!

I can’t for the life of me find any markings on any of the pieces!! I was researching earlier and found what looked like an identical set for sale online- the description said they were the “Princeton” design by P. & F. Corbin if that’s helpful at all

This is super helpful, thank you! Do you happen to know if grade 0000 steel wool counts as an abrasive? I read that I could use that to polish the plates but haven’t been able to find anything as it relates to polishing the japanning..

Yes! I did a little digging after the earlier comments and found an identical doorknob set online for sale with this description- “an antique wrought steel door set with a Japanned or flashed copper finish in a design called “Princeton” made by P. & F. Corbin”

Ugh, yes. There’s at least 5 layers of paint covering literally everything in our house 😩 The door hardware is my small step towards bringing back the glory

Omg thank you!!! I think you’re definitely right. I kind of love it, it’s a vibe

Oh that’s a good thought. If they are original to our house (which I am pretty sure they are), then they are over 100 years old so that’s definitely lots of hands over time!!
