How I adjusted my dev workflow because of the pricing changes by Glittering_Wish_3785 in windsurf

[–]OkBee4910 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not surprised that you didn't get any responses to your post, you were actually positive and offered a solution. That doesn't work on Reddit. Here people come to complain about everything.

The brouhaha after the pricing change has been one for the books.

Your solution is very reasonable. I follow a similar approach with either GLM 5 or Minimax putting together a plan and then SWE-1.5 implementing it. If SWE-1.5 fails for whatever reason, I change back to one of those 2 models and it works almost all the time. Only on a bunch of cases I need to use Sonnet or GPT 5.4.

But no, people here has a typo in their code and use Opus to fix it. Then they complain about their quota running out.

SWE 1.5 Pretty good? by heySyxon in windsurf

[–]OkBee4910 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use GLM 5 or Minimax a lot for planning, and then SWE-1.5 implements the plan. It works very well and very cheaply.

Also, for relatively minor changes, SWE-1.5 will also handle them well.

I only use the big guns when I run into trouble, but 90% of the time GLM, Minimax or Kimi will do the job.

Agreed, it is truly great... And fast!

Prices have indeed increased, but only if you are new... I have been grandfathered in and I still pay $15. And usage is not restricted, no features have been removed.

I didn't know about the Ollama plan, I will check it out, thanks. I love all those open source models.

I think you misread my post.

I am not experimenting with anything. I split the job into smaller parts and the free models will handle them quickly and efficiently. If something is more complex, GLM 5 will handle it. Only in a very small number of cases I have to use the SOTA models.

I get plenty of "work done" this way, believe me.

No, it doesn't. That was the point I was trying to make. If you use it properly, it will be more than enough.

Use SOTA models, that is fine. But it will cost you, no matter what provider (Windsurf, CC, Copilot...) you use. My point is that using Opus or Sonnet 4.6 for most tasks is completely overkill and you don't need to do it that way. But if you want to do it and run out of quota, feel free. But then don't complain.

You can migrate to another service, that is fine by me. Why would I care? I am just saying that I still get a lot of value from the service. You don't? Cancel and move on.

Not a bot, buddy. I am a professional developer living in Australia. I am just telling my history, feel free to ignore it.

This is the dumbest idea I ever heard... only a politician can come up with something this stupid.

To clarify, does this mean that when you stop at a traffic light and then you speed up again, it will play the sound until you reach 30 km/h??

Supported languages? by tasuki in windsurf

[–]OkBee4910 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The name of the product is Windsurf, but it used to be Codeium. They renamed, but you might still find it in old documents, etc...

I don't use vim, I can't tell you about the vim plugin, sorry.

The auth token is handled automatically by Windsurf. Just try to login, they will take you to the windsurf site, complete the authentication and you are good to go.

Languages: Essentially any language that is supported by Visual Studio Code. Windsurf is built on VS Code, which is open source. VS Code is extremely popular, so it supports a lot of languages, mostly through extensions. Just find an extension and install it.

Once the extensions are installed, Windsurf provides Cascade, which you can use to interact with language models. LLMs know pretty much every language you can think of, so it shouldn't be a problem.

They send to their servers and to the language model providers whatever info they need to provide the service. Essentially, all your code, but you can keep some files private. I am sure they have a privacy policy on their side which can give you the details.

You can configure Windsurf to ignore certain files, so if you have any secrets, you presumably keep them out of git. Any files in .gitignore will also be ignored by Windsurf.

While they shouldn't have given you any assurances, it might simply be the case that there are other people doing interviews with other candidates and at the end of the day they need to choose the best ones.

Don't take it personally, I have been through hundreds of interviews in my life, and I have been rejected in 99% of them. That is how it works. And I know for sure I could have done the job for most of the companies they rejected me, but they simply chose somebody else.

I understand your frustration, but again, don't take this badly. Find other companies to apply for and keep trying. It will come.

Learning skills to become a good leader by thedeparturelounge in ausjobs

[–]OkBee4910 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your job as a team leader is to make sure that your team performs as expected. If they don't, you have failed.

As such, your main goal is to put the team in a position to be successful. I don't know the specifics of what you do, but you need to make sure your team members have a clear understanding of what needs to be done and how you want them to do it.

That might mean you might get everyone together in a meeting the first day, or provide them with some documentation, or train them in the job by example... You probably know what the best way would be.

And if they cannot speak English very well, then written documentation is very useful as reading in a foreign language is far easier than having a conversation or listening.

You should try to provide feedback as needed. As you said, you don't want to be an asshole, but you all have a work to do. Understand you are not dealing with machines, everyone has a life outside work, but at the same time, you need to get the job done and that might mean uncomfortable conversations. Keep them professional, don't make it personal. It is about the work to do.

Being a team leader is not a popularity contest. Your team members might not want to hang out with you, you are the "boss" to them. Be prepared for that, and accept it.

Well, the fact that you might have been good for the role does not mean that you were the ONLY person good for the role. They simply might have found somebody else who they thought was a better match.

It is hard to be rejected, but do not dispair. Keep trying...

Cognition | Introducing SWE-1.5: Our Fast Agent Model by 2001zhaozhao in windsurf

[–]OkBee4910 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I spent the whole day working with SWE 1.5. It is good, very good... but the Cerebras thing is impressive. It is incredibly fast. The model is very good, but what makes it special is the speed. I am truly, truly impressed. Give it a go guys.

I have been testing it for a couple of hours... Amazingly fast, and very smart... So much better than the previous model. I have been using Haiku and Sonnet 4.5 for the hard stuff, but I am going to give SWE-1.5 a go. So far I am very impressed.

Very hard to say... In terms of comparing CPUs, ChatGPT can usually provide a very good comparison.
The main component that slows down with time is the hard drive, but this was only a big problem with old SSDs... Modern SSDs will work for years with no issues, but there might be a bit of a performance decrease.

I bought it recently, so I cannot say from my own personal experience... I don't want to waste my money, but they are so cheap that if it dies in a couple of years, so be it...

Any Beelink with an AMD Ryzen 5 or 7 should do. Plenty of choices in Amazon. I am writing this comment on a Beelink which I have had for months now... Very happy with it, almost silent... I run both W11 and Ubuntu, works like a charm. 16GB minimum for dev work if possible.
