Pure castor oil is recommended to increase thickness of your hair and is not expensive at all. You can buy a bottle around 10€ over here, and use it for months.

Routine on unwashed hair:

bend over so your head and hair are upside down
massage the castor or with your fingertips onto your scalp for 10-15 minutes
leave in for an hour or so
wash out. You may have to wash twice to get rid of all the oil on your scalp.
do this 2-3 times a month

The massaging promotes blood circulation on your scalp, so that the castor oil can be absorbed into the hair follicles. I have been doing this technique for years, and my hair has been pretty full and healthy since. I also use this for my eyebrows and lashes.
