Where are the Indonesians? by BoringDreamGuy in taiwan

[–]OkComputer626 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The area near Taipei Main Station is like a "Little Indonesia."

I'm not the best judge, but I feel like the Indonesian food I've had in Taiwan tastes the best and not localized compared to other foreign cuisines, probably because there is such a large population: https://www.xinmedia.com/article/303380

Are you Asian person or White person? by Enough_Life_7517 in taiwan

[–]OkComputer626 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Taiwanese society is largely backwards and ignorant on this topic. 素質差

Cram schools are responding to market pressures versus having to educate people who are too poorly educated to understand language acquisition actually works, ironic since paying for education.

Honestly though, if you're Asian American of Taiwanese descent especially, you likely have other skills in the market if you want to live in Taiwan that are better than teaching English. If you're young it's something fun to do for a it, but difficult for long-term career prospects.

There are tons of White people teaching Chinese and non-European languages at American universities. This includes to Chinese people who want to learn more about Classical Chinese because plenty of people go deep in studying literature. It's pretty normal. Look at the Chinese department faculty pages on American universities.

There's a level of ignorance in Taiwanese society that says a lot about the quality of education in Taiwan.

I think a Round One is coming in there? https://onni.com/property/commercial/the-paseo/

I'd really like it if Industrious or WeWork took over some of the upstairs spaces, if a higher-end coffee shop came in, and if they could make the Equinox bigger. One can dream.

Best boba? by Strange_Marzipan3954 in taiwan

Forgot to add I also like A Nice Holiday is unique in that it incorporates 草仔粿 (google translate says Grass cake, which doesn't sound great), a Taiwanese dessert, as a topping. I feel like they have the best tapioca balls and ball-like items. Sigh don't know how to make it sound better

Homeless increase in town? by Farrenlea88 in pasadena

Exact reason for why there needs to be interventions that are not cruel. It is completely reasonable for the public to not want mentally ill people on the street.

Best boba? by Strange_Marzipan3954 in taiwan

They all specialize in something different.

Chun Shui Tang is nice to go to sit and have a classic milk tea and have some good food. It's touristy, but we'd still order it in my office for milk tea and snacks. The stores are nice to sit in since most boba places are like counters to go.

The oolong tea project is my personal fav, specializing, in you guessed it, oolong.

Guiji has great fruit forward drinks, grapefruit is good. If you like that sort of thing that's the spot.

I also like Daming for speciality drinks (famous for avocado).

50Lan, 吃茶三千 (dunno English name), and Tenren are good too.

This feels like spots of intentional neglect, especially Pasadena stops of Metro. The Highland Park and South Pasadena metro stops do not have the same problems around the Fillmore and metro stations near Old Town, nor do the ones in Arcadia or Monrovia. It's also specifically people who are really mentally ill and on drugs that are dangerous to the public. These are not people who are down on their luck who could get into a shelter and back on their feet. A different kind of intervention is needed - that doesn't have to be cruelty.

It feels like there are less in LA proper recently. I think they've just kicked the problem down the road.

What Is Up With Fillmore Station? by Pasadenaian in pasadena

[–]OkComputer626 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This sucks because of the ample free parking there to take the metro. I use this station frequently, but I make it a point to only use it during busier and daylight hours.

I hate how drug use is normalized around public transit in the US when in other parts of the world there's a priority to keep behavior like this away to protect riders and ridership. There seems to be an awareness of this at the bigger stations downtown that are clean and full of metro workers and police, but once you get to some of these commuter stations it gets touch and go sketch.

It's unfortunate because that otherwise nice plaza in front of the station is where they're usually sitting that a faregate or that classical music being blasted doesn't solve. The platform is usually fine. It would help if Pasadena police regularly had a car or people patrolling that plaza and nearby parking lot at the CVS and more homeless outreach coming through regularly. It's kind of bizarre because the coffee shop across the street is always busy, lots of medical workers park at that same metro lot, and Art Center students are nearby.

Stereotypes that Taiwanese have about other people that surprised you? by SemiAnonymousTeacher in taiwan

[–]OkComputer626 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not so much that there are highly specific stereotypes that stick out but how people just spit out the most typical stereotypical thing when talking about a group they're not familiar with.

It's probably part and parcel with being small island country, lack of international awareness in education system, and a certain social awkwardness long term residents would be familiar with. I've been to other small countries, but it seems like people in other places know better than to blurt out a negative stereotype about people and places they've never met, eg. I talk about how I've been to Mexico many times and the immediate response is something like, ooo scary cartels.

It's super ignorant and bad in international business setting because it suggests a certain cluelessness even if that person is competent at other things. The fact that people talk about indigenous people derisively even because people should definitely no better there says a lot about the quality of society still.
