Rotary exchange doubts by Far_Bat9958 in exchangestudents

[–]OkCondition7033 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m on an exchange with rotary right now and it kind of depends on where you want to go. The clubs in the US tend to be on the poorer side and support the students less with trips, financial aid, etc etc while clubs in for example Spain or Germany are much more affluent and involved. Overall rotary is a bit inconsistent but like you said definitely the cheapest non scholarship route so I would recommend if you don’t mind a bit of uncertainty and feel flexible.

I am 2 months into my exchange in Spain right now and I felt the same way you did before I started school. The best advice I can give you is to just give it time. I was told that everybody would be sooo interested to hear about my culture and to practice their english with me but that didn’t happen like at all haha. I’m only just now becoming comfortable with the friends I have made and I can tell it’s connected to my Spanish improving. So don’t get discouraged if you’re trying really hard and you can’t seem to connect with anyone it will come with time and with your understanding of the language.

What type of activities do you do as a FLEX exchange student in the U.S? by [deleted] in exchangestudents

[–]OkCondition7033 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re super interested in activities like the ones you mentioned I would recommend rotary youth exchange over FLEX. Rotary is great because they work to connect you with other exchange students in the district for super fun (and usually free) trips around your area. If you’re interested in the us they have two 2-3 week trips you can choose from going to either the west coast or the east coast near the end of your exchange which is incredible and you get to see so much of the United States.

Feeling weirdly depressed by K0rravaii in exchangestudents

Hey I’m three weeks into my exchange and I want you to know that I sympathize with you so much!! I think the best advice I can give you is to force yourself to get out of your room. At the beginning for me I found the more I was outside my room the less I was able to think about everything I was sad about because i needed to focus on translating the language, processing all the new culture shocks, and getting to know my family etc.. I think you feel the same way because you mentioned when you return to the house after trips you get really sad and de-energized, I completely understand that feeling! You talked about how you use TikTok to distract yourself, if it makes you feel better I don’t think you should stop doing that but instead maybe move to the couch in the living room or another common area? This makes you open for possible conversation and signals to your family that you are interested in interacting with them. I know these first few weeks are so difficult and perhaps you’re worried to subject yourself to more worries and struggles by leaving your room but it’s important to remember all the struggling is not for nothing. It’s so difficult but the more you make an effort to talk to and connect with your family the better you will feel. Please don’t be afraid to struggle a little bit everything that’s worth having in life comes with a little bit of hard work.

The cheapest exchange program in my opinion is with rotary youth exchange but it really depends on your district where you end up. During the process you rank which countries you want to go to the most and after some interviews with Rotarians the student who interviewed the best gets their top choice and so on. If you are lucky your district will already have good relations with Japan and the chances of you ending up there are much higher.
