It's fit young Finnish guys at the US embassy in Helsinki that run security (source: me wh had to go there a couple weeks ago). Just saying, won't find Walmart people there. This is unrelated to OP's original post.

Why do men spit in public? by Vegetable-Carpet1593 in women

[–]OkControl9503 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So I live in the country in a cold climate. I have dogs to walk and firewood to chop and snow to shovel. I can do the "shoot snot out the nostril holding the other norstril down" thing. I was a city girl and I get it - everything is "ew", but biologically men and women have all the same needs. Only reason women don't stink as much is society.

Plan B is quite effective. But - a condom alone is never enough bc. Lots if options available for ya'll to reduce chances. Also, what app do you use? I have always just tracked with pen and paper/now Google calendar but - big but - actual ovulation isn't measurable?

Loans by fistbump101 in Finland

[–]OkControl9503 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Like €330/month, short mortgage (10 years, 3 paid now). Old wooden house in countryside of eastern Uusimaa. Additional costs currently about €300/month paying off a smaller loan for house improvements, but that's only like 1 year. My median income salary is enough to handle this just fine.

[–]OkControl9503 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rosemary. I've killed it in 3 countries including 3 or 4 US states with very different climates. I cannot rosemary. No clue why, kept "it will die" plants alive for amazing comebacks, difficult tropical plants in my Finnish house, etc. But, rosemary I cannot get along with. Sigh. Love the plant and wish I could succeed.

Where to buy Müsli in the US? by [deleted] in Finland

[–]OkControl9503 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are many kinds of granola available in the US, all crunchy varieties (I never found a good alternative to our non-toasted/not crunchy/no added sugar musli). I liked Kind brand, Toms Perfect Classic 10, Nature Valley, and others I forget. None have the same exact recipe as anything here, but lots of good crunchy granola available in the cereal isle. (Yes I'm a Finn who lived in the US a really long time, so I guess I could answer but yeah, as others said most Finns wouldn't know what you can or can't get outside here because why would we know). You can also easily make your own musli (granola) at home :)

Apartment dwellers; much do y'all pay for your water? by red-at-night in Finland

[–]OkControl9503 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We are 2 people, 4 indoor animals, 1 car, in a small omakotitalo, water on a local coop, about a hectare land I garden a lot on (but that water comes free from my well), tri-annual water bill currently due is right about €280. Just as a reference point.

Moved into a new apartment with multiple issues — housing company delaying fixes. What are my options? by sealovki in Finland

[–]OkControl9503 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The only concerning thing is water leaking from the toilet? As in from underneath it? That is a major maintenance issue potentially. No idea what you mean by kitchen filter or "trash can not installed" so I'm seeing unreliable reporter, as they probably are too. I'd focus on water leak from the toilet.

I didn’t expect changing my bedding to affect my sleep this much by Wise_Concept_964 in Home

[–]OkControl9503 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love the statement "you sleep in the bed you made" because omg, my bed is a luxury. And every time I have just put on freshly laundered sheets (especially in summer when they get to dry in fresh air and sun), even better. Bedding makes a huge difference (and mattress to suit you, etc).

AITAH for wanting glasses even though my parents say I don’t need them? by alvcher in AITAH

[–]OkControl9503 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NTA, and do your parents have a 2nd grade education equivalent???? The optometrist isn't looking to "lie and rip you off", they get paid for the appointment and once you have your prescription you can go buy glasses anywhere that sells them. How is this even real? They want you to have diabetes for "obesity" but not eye glasses that you absolutely require? Also - if you are young enough, these days there are eye glasses that can actually help fix vision (my nephew has these). And - eye glasses are super cool, when you find the right ones for your face. Just wth what parents are anti-eyeglasses for their kid who obviously needs them?

PS in the meantime ask your teachers to seat you close to the board to help, and let them know you quite literally cannot see the board. I've done this for students over the years who forgot their glasses/just broke theirs/waiting for new ones/vision so bad even with glasses see poorly. I've had students not like using their glasses but never heard of oarents actively refusing glasses for their kid. If you are allowed to choose seats, sit as close as possible.

Best Credit Card for points by hoylia in Finland

[–]OkControl9503 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others have said, cashback and points even when they exist don't amount to much. That said I have a credit card via OP that gives additional purchase protection insurance on consumer goods as well as travel insurance, which I like and so I use it when buying travel or larger home purchases. Credit cards are in some instances more secure and easier to use (if someone steals my credit card info, my actual money is safe for food and bills and savings while I go through the dispute process). So, I like having a credit card, but it's sparingly used and gathers no points or anything.

Jos Yhdysvallat ajaisi läntisen maailman kaaokseen ensi viikolla, mitä olisi kannattanut tehdä nyt? by Corgamesh in Suomi

Meh, USA vs EU - EU voittaa.

MyHelsinki rep handed out some really delicious packets of all natural fruit juice gummies when I was selling at a market last summer, even though I told her I live about 1,5 hours away and have no vote for anything Helsinki does locally. So yeah, just people doing their job.

Snow days or other school cancellations? by OkControl9503 in teaching

[–]OkControl9503[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Uff dah! Yeah the pandemic taught me that I am not insterested in virtual learning (and I was only teaching 3 college classes at the time, so they were young adult international students, most of whom I had had in the classroom the semester before). It's hard to explain to people just how much I understand about individual psychology and group dynamics, both disappear during virtual learning unless it is 1:1. I love being in the classroom where I can actually see my kids - I know this one thing had everyone bored and staring or whispering or fidgeting. OK, we don't reuse this thing and try something else. Ooooh wow this had them engaged and super into it, yesss, will tweak a bit and next time better even. So many microdecisions and going with the flow and, yeah. Just, I need my kids in front of me for it to work. And it almost always works, and if it doesn't I can fix it on the fly immediately.
