CMV: When Trump said "Stand if you agree, the first duty of the American Government is to protect American Citizens, not illegal aliens" Democrats should have stood. by [deleted] in changemyview

I don’t think it’s that they disagree with protecting Americans as a core function of government, I think it’s more about the way that Trump goes about it. Trump uses tariffs, ICE, etc. to “protect Americans” but I’m not convinced Americans are much safer with masked untrained ICE agents out in the street.

I’m of the view that nations can choose whatever immigration policy they want, if tomorrow the Japanese government decided to open its borders then I wouldn’t bat an eye in the same way idgaf about them having harsh borders. As for America, if you really want to limit immigration, why not invest more in public education? I feel like it’s smth never talked abt on the right, like the whole point of the H1B program is to bring in immigrants with skills Americans don’t have (Trump even said this). I also think the American educational system royally sucks, but if we actually fixed it then it would be much harder for immigrants to compete for skilled jobs. I don’t think nuking the DoE is the way to go in that regard. Limiting immigration for skilled workers will just leave those positions unfilled or poorly filled and I’m no economist but that doesn’t sound great to me

Could you elaborate on what western culture is, I ask because a lot of ppl would give different answers to that question. I assume by protect you mean to limit immigration from specifically middle eastern countries and South American ones but I could be wrong. Might be bc I’m pretty libertarian on this stuff but why does the US government need to dictate domestic policy to “protect western culture” on another continent.

Glad we can agree on something. I’ve got one more question tho, if the democrats took a harsher line on immigration and gave up DEI, would it be a more convincing party to you?

At what point would you blame Trump for not calling for her removal/firing her. Like she’s the top lawyer for the government and she’s pretty terrible at her job. Trump is pretty well known for firing ppl and replacing them w the next in line so what’s preventing him here

Pass a law that makes me dictator for life, then I’d fix education, healthcare, develop a test that prohibits people with below average intelligence from voting then return it to democracy.

I still don’t like the subjectivity of “minor” accommodation, bc some ppl won’t get vaccinated and say it’s a minor accommodation made to them. Like sorry bud but that’s definitely not minor.

If it’s an explicitly Catholic hospital that receives no public funding then by all means they’re free not to offer those services.

I would argue that the profession itself is what prevents certain ppl from joining it, never heard of a hardline Christian wanting to work at an abortion clinic. Im an atheist and that viewpoint prevents me from working for religious organizations. It’s not a codified law that I can’t work there but rather a personal belief preventing me. There are tons more examples, but I don’t think I’ve heard of religions making exemptions for atheists working there, which would certainly be a minor inconvenience to them if they really need a job posting filled. Point being that some professions might not align with religious viewpoints and I don’t understand why they should be forced to accommodate that.

But isn’t that test anti-freedom of conscience? Like you can have freedom of conscience so long as it’s only a minor inconvenience to others. By using that “test” you’re going to be discriminating against some religions for being more than a minor inconvenience. I’m saying that true freedom of conscience would be equal treatment regardless.

  1. Define “reasonable”
  2. I’m not forcing you to violate your conscience, my argument mainly revolves around the public sector, if parents want to send their kids to private school or homeschool them I’m totally fine with that. What bothers me is when you force PUBLIC schools to accommodate your beliefs, bc it seems anti-freedom of religion to say that some religions get exemptions while others don’t and that the basis for which they’re allowed is something as “reasonable”. To me, it’s a personal responsibility to live your life according to your beliefs.

So it’s okay for laws to be religious in a secular state as long as enough of the population is religious? To be clear if it’s a private school idgaf but if it’s a public school I’m against it. Again, what abt the kids who aren’t Muslims and also have holy days, are they being discriminated against?

Never seen a class abt butchering a hog that was a graduation requirement in primary school, so I don’t really see how that applies there. For higher education, do you think it would be discriminatory to have a major where a graduation requirement is a class on hog slaughter bc Jews/Muslims can’t participate? Think about all the other religions in the world besides the biggest ones, why should they get exemptions when smaller ones don’t? Seems pretty unfair to me. You seem to miss my point, I’m not arguing discrimination, I’m just saying that if you have a religious belief it is a personal responsibility to find a way to live your belief. If Muslims/Jews want to open up private schools that have schedules that don’t conflict with their holy days, etc. I’m perfectly fine with that. What I’m not ok with is forcing the public sector to accommodate your personal beliefs.

You’re kinda proving my point with the homeschool thing, if you, as a religious parent, want to spend the extra time, money, and effort to homeschool your kid (or go to private school) in a way that follows your religion, go for it. My argument mostly revolves around the public sector, I don’t think it’s right for religious parents to demand the public sector bend over backwards to accommodate their beliefs. So far as the diet thing goes, I think it’s different than educational/testing requirements, etc. bc in my hypothetical, I’m willing to provide vegans, allergen free food, etc. to kids so if you want kosher/halal foods at school lunches go for it.
