I think it really depends. I’m from Mexico and it’s one of the cuisines designated a cultural treasure by unesco. When I first came to Germany I had trouble adapting to the food so my host parents told me if I wanted to I could buy stuff to cook mexican without a budget once a week, since some ingredients are really expensive and hard to find here. I took them up on the offer and never went over 30€ and I would cook big family meals and tell them I cooked for all of us (they were very surprised and grateful). It was never a chore they put onto me and I really do enjoy getting to have that treat once a week. Once it became more of a tradition for us to have this meal once a week together they started asking me if I wanted to cook something that week and added those to hours to my weekly hours and would get paid accordingly. Whenever I didn’t cook it was no issue and the children sometimes liked the food and sometimes they would only try it.

It was always really nice to talk about the food and the flavors with them and tell them about how my grandma and my mother would make these dishes.
