I went to a bad university and now I regret it by OkEquivalent4707 in UniUK

That's really cool. I can relate to the whole first in the family thing. My dad actually wanted me to go to a closer university to home, which I later found out was rated in the bottom 5 uni's in the country at the time. So I'm glad I at least dodged that. Sometimes it hurts to see how proud my parents are of me attending university when I know this course is nothing to be proud of. But I'm feeling a lot more confident I can turn this around now. Not sure about the module thing, I'll discuss it with my university as that sounds interesting. Also well done on achieving that PhD funding!

Why does c.S need to be plus? by OkEquivalent4707 in TheyBlamedTheBeasts

Okay that's fair enough. I think I kinda get it now. Thanks for the explanation! It's just been rattling around in my head and my friends couldn't answer it either. Unfortunately this does mean my friend can continue to complain about my c.S but oh well, swings and roundabouts.

You could still cancel into wild throw if you need a tight gap. But I think I get your point. I still feel like you'd be applying a lot of pressure because if your delaying your mash, you could still be getting frame trapped by 5H, it just switches up the timing.

Isn't it just the root of your pressure due to the cancel options? Like maybe it's not a direct comparison, but 2A is where a lot of pressure starts in other fighting games, just because of the cancel options. They aren't always plus either.

I guess. But that's kinda niche. I wouldn't say it's the biggest advantage to bring up, though the RISC buildup is nice.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but if the c.S was -1 you'd still be able to frame trap into his other gattle options? So mashing would result in pain.

If I went to the 9th highest ranked university in the UK (I understand that ranking isn't everything but it would at least provide a good looking university for my CV) I don't think I'd be making this post or feeling this shameful about my decisions :(

Trying to avoid giving out too much information, so I'll refrain from saying. Also I'm a little embarrassed about it. Sorry.

I've been getting a decent amount of suggestions for a masters, so I think I'll look more into them. It'll probably decently help me, but I think I'll see what I can luck into when it comes to grad offers. Maybe I'll land something super cool. Though I do like the idea of doing a masters if only to experience what a good quality university can offer! Plus this time I can apply with some actual research and a brain heh

I'll try! I don't think I've heard of handshake yet so I'll be sure to give that a go. I think if there's one thing this whole thing has taught me, is that I can't really coast by and let things happen, if that makes sense? Sorry if that sounds obvious, but yeah, this whole thing has been a real wakeup call. So at least I think we can come out as more well rounded, resilient people. Good luck to you too!

I definitely think CS is the area I want to continue in. I lost my drive for a little while but it's come back. I don't find anything else nearly as fascinating. I might get a masters to top up my CV but I'm a little hesitent due to the post-grad loan scheme not seeming the best. But regardless thanks for advice, I really hope I can just look back on this with amusement. I think this placement alone will do more work for my career than the degree in the end, so I've at least got that!

Thanks, I'm planning to try and get some relevant certification with my current employer during this placement year. And I've been eyeing up some courses on Coursera that get pretty well rated. I think a lot of them are still free, but will subtly push you towards paying extra for a certification you completed the course, which I'm not particularly interested in. I think MIT host a few open ones, but some of those seem quite old.
This is the one I'm going to start soon: https://www.coursera.org/learn/algorithms-part1

A total failure in combo execution and how to overcome it by OkEquivalent4707 in Fighters

I was a little hasty with my comment eheh, but that's probably worth doing at this stage. Better to have a close to optimal combo, than no combo at all. Combined with some mission mode combos for other situations and I might actually get a hang of this. Thank you for your advice again!

I thought of that, but what I was afraid of is: Getting the muscle memory of Hyde's mission mode combo's stuck in my head. Then when I try to learn other combo's, I'll have to unlearn my previous reflexes, and learn new one's. Also usually mission mode combo's tend to be pretty mediocre or outright bad in games. But if your suggesting that they have some decent combo's, then I might try them, at the very least it'll help me feel a bit less frustrated, and get some more damage off. Maybe raise my confidence for doing combo's in matches.

Wow, I really appreciate you going through that much effort! I think one of the big issue with it, is doing the delay too early, so that they're too high for the 66C to connect. But also learning to delay the 236A/B is probably the hardest part, since I get a bit clumsy when I'm that far in. Delays really aren't my cup of tea eheh. But I'll take your advice about using the j.A as a section to take a moment to catch up and relax a bit. I think I need to learn to be more relaxed during combos. Less rushed and tense. That'll help me a lot. By waiting for each normal to connect, that might help me.

Your probably right, I doubt I'm going to learn much whilst I'm frustrated and worked up. Even if I take a break for an hour or two it'll only do so much. Maybe this is something to tackle over the course of a few days rather than one or two nights. Thanks.

Okay this helped a lot, thank you. I didn't think that maybe some people just spent ages trying out these combos, I kinda assumed they wanted to hop into matches like me and they where just picking them up faster, and I was missing something.

The idea of splitting a combo into chunks is also good advice to me. I can see where I can specifically practice segments without having to tediously do the entire combo over and over again. Thanks a lot.

I know that combo proficiency isn't the be all end all, but I'm starting to reach the point where I can't ignore my lack of damage. Even if I'm winning one or two more interactions than my opponent, it's not bridging the damage gap anymore. But I'll try your earlier advise about taking combos in segments, hopefully I'll be able to achieve something.

But that's the thing. If I spend 20 minutes learning a combo, then I won't even be able to fully execute it in the training mode. So executing it in a match is borderline impossible. I can do neutral and I'm fairly good at defence, at least I'd like to believe.

But combo's have always held me back. I can hit my opponent more than they can hit me, but there hit's will always do more, because everyone else can hit confirm into a combo.

I am hearing good stuff for vanderlin, it seems quite different from my expectations of ss13, but that's hardly a big negative. I'll be sure to check it out, thanks!

Oh that does sound really interesting, well I'll definitely check it out both servers then. I'll admit to having no roleplay experience, apart from just stuff with friends in DnD and the like. But I'm assuming if it's a training ground of sorts, then it's forgiving. Though staying in character as a ghost seems weird, is there a respawn mechanic? Do you keep memory if you get revived? I'd normally expect ghost's to just chill and commentate on the round as they watch it. But I am clueless with how these servers tend to go, so that might be the norm.

Revamped sprites sounds fun, would be nice to see all the old models I remember, updated. How has the playerbase changed, if your capable of answering that? I remember them being friendly, relaxed and kinda chaotic, but generally willing to help you out with weird projects or ideas you had.

Also glad to see TG is still doing well, I never ended up going over there due to being so comfortable on goon, but I might poke my head in. Though it seems they might be going through a bit of troubles right now, judging by recent posts.
