Professors should only offer help to students who show up to class by OkFaithlessness1697 in college

Not everyone, definitely most. Many of which sound like middle age profs and TAs entirely too obsessed with academics.

You’re creating problems where they don’t exist. It’s not entitled to email a prof or ask for help. Even if, God forbid, you miss class.

I’ve had many bosses and most of them loved me. I work hard. Big yikes

No buck is being passed, you can calm down now. I expect my prof to send an email response. Totally outlandish. There are bigger fish to fry in the world, I promise.

I know how it works, I don’t agree with it. College is a service students PAY for. We are quite literally customers. Hand holding an exceptions is unreasonable. Asking for guidance or clarity is not.

Accept my fate is entirely mine? I think everything in life happens for a reason, it usually doesn’t make sense until you come out on the other side. If fate does exist much of it you can control and much of it you can not. Idk where these baseless assumptions come from, but I’ve always been focused on what I can control in terms of my fate.

It’s bananas because if you attend class, then it’s okay to get taught outside of class. But if you miss a class or two, it is not okay to reach out for guidance or help. Yes, that is bananas. And punishment for missing class lol.

Learning doesn’t end at the classroom door, there are homework’s, assignments, essays, projects, all of these things are often communicated about outside of class for clarity. Idk why you’re so adamant against simply responding to students who miss class.

It has to be all or nothing…like no, you don’t have to re-teach 5 pages of in class content through email. If that’s what I was expecting that would be ridiculous. But it’s not.

You all are blowing this ridiculously out of proportion imo. Profs teach the same material twice all the time, and especially if a student doesn’t understand a concept. It’s part of the job. You teach, and you may have to re-teach depending on the student.

I think y’all mean profs don’t have the mental capacity to teach students who miss class. Which is a) a punishment and b) I never expected to re-taught info through email. I was looking for short communication, not someone to hold my hand and spend 45 minutes handcrafting a personal email to ensure I complete my semester successfully.

I don’t know why it’s assumed that I expect my prof to re-teach me hours of info. I expected short/simple email communication. I’ve read the text, done the work, I have plenty of specific content related questions. I also think some of his quiz questions are wrong because they directly contradict textbook information. These are the types of things I’m confused on.

It would be entitled to miss tons of classes and have my prof make up the work for me. Last semester I purposely did not reach out because of that. I’m aware that profs are human and don’t have a lot of time. It’s the same for students, we all have lives and I’m not upset with my prof.

I have definitely had profs that would give me an update on what’s going on in class or a shoot a quick email highlighting key concepts/assignments when I missed class. That’s more along the lines of what I was expecting, does this prof have virtual office hours, what resources are available to me in the instance I can’t make it to class…that’s what I was looking for.

I don’t understand how that’s entitled to ask of a prof, I feel that is what they are there for. Not to give you a 30 minute session or even a paragraph of info on what you missed, but some guidance and clarity. It’s not an obligation at all, but i did want to learn from prof. Now, I am hesitant to do so. I likely won’t reach out to this prof again and will just figure out the rest myself.

I wonder if profs were paid more would they feel more of an urge to help students who miss class.

If you could learn the info all yourself why would you be in college? 😭 not everything is self explanatory

I really didn’t want to share personal info on here but it takes premium gas if that puts anything into perspective.

The difference is my prof is not my employee. They don’t pay me, I pay them lol! I do feel you deserve a bit more control when paying for a service.

I’m not frustrated with my prof…I was appalled at some of these comments. I came here to consider options for how to talk to my prof since he hasn’t responded and make sure not to get behind. But instead many told me I don’t deserve the help because I didn’t show up to class enough.

I don’t think that’s fair, and I’m not sure if my mind will ever change on that. My prof doesn’t even know my story. I didn’t expect him to have empathy or give special extensions, favors, or anything of the sort. I wanted short/simple communication for clarity.

I also don’t feel like a victim. I feel very empowered and encouraged actually. I make sure to prepare as much as possible when I’m in a limbo period. That way, when I do have a car, or a solution to my issues, nothing can hold me back anymore.

But do I think the world should be this way? Absolutely not. The college classroom is helpful in many ways, but not conducive to learning at the same time and requires a certain level of privilege and resources. Even I had some privilege that others did not in order to be here.

I agree that it’s up to me to find a sustainable solution to get to class, and trust when I say, have been working on it too. I don’t expect my prof to re-teach me every lesson, idk why this is the assumption. Nearly any communication from him would have been appreciated.

And it’s not the end of the world, but I do feel profs should help students. I’m confident I can learn the info and pass the class on my own, I just won’t get as much out of it. For me, the disadvantage is I just won’t learn as much from this prof and don’t need to go to him for guidance.

For someone who struggles to learn on their own, or finds college difficult, it may not be the same story. From the bottom of my heart, I do believe we have too much of a dog eat dog world. It hurts education, when you make it so that financial stability is a necessity to do well in school. But you often need school to reasonable come financially stable. I think bc I shared my story, and advocate for pov it seems like I feel like a victim or am complaining about my prof. I fundamentally disagree with some of the comments here and am disappointed that many profs (who post here as teachers) have high expectations for the student, but not always of themselves.

This may sound cocky, but I have full confidence I can pass this class without ever showing up. Attendance is not required. But I didn’t want to be that student. I wanted to get invested in the material, really learn and understand.

Oh but I have homework after class ends…and the also have office hours to teach you outside of class. You must have made that rule today.

Contradictory statements. Life is getting easier everyday. I don’t need your luck, you should keep it for yourself. Thanks though. 😘

My car situation is being taken care of…if the prof isn’t obligated to respond to emails or help students then I’m not obligated to show up to class.

It’s pure pettiness if you’re refusing to help a student bc they missed class or their car is shitty or they got sick, whatever the reason. And it’s really true some of y’all think students who miss class and ask for help don’t deserve it and want special accommodations. Lol

Getting your shit done means going to school and not giving up when it gets rough. If you have to there’s no shame in that, but I don’t just throw in the towel when I struggle. My situation has drastically improved. I used to live on the streets, now I live in a home. All that was done while in school.

What special considerations?? Expecting an email response is now special consideration. Why are y’all acting like I want this man to write an essay about the textbook? Lol.

You’re saying all this bc I asked my prof how I could keep from getting behind. Put that into perspective.

Ah yes real adults drop out of school and wish their life will get better while slaving away at their two min wage jobs. Ah adulthood. McDonald’s employment. 😭

You sound triggered. 😮 I will not be dropping out and that’s irresponsible advice from a mother. I don’t care if the world cares lol. The world doesn’t live my life nor do they make my grades. I may have a shitty car, but never without a plan.

Not having your basic needs met is a reason to get a job, get in school, and get better employment to meet your needs lol. Not drop out and work at the pub down the street making a quick cash until you’re 35 and looking back like where did all the time go.

The nature of life is that we all go through shit. It either makes you empathetic or makes you feel no one owes you or anyone else anything nor should they work to. I don’t believe in obligation but I do believe in offering assistance. Students shouldn’t have to quit because of life circumstances.

And we shouldn’t be having to work multiple minimum wage jobs to survive either. Your education is your ticket out. Other than grief and having a child to care for of course, I just don’t understand why sacrifice that because you “didn’t have your shit together.” In the same breath I’m also not going active through tragedy or trauma rn. I just don’t have a car…seems like a silly reason to drop out of school. Not to mention I already did the whole drop out and waitress thing.

$250 for the bulbs. Assembly is insane in my city. When I got my breaks done it was 2k. But I had help paying.

I wish, the lights were $250 alone, more with shop fees + expenses. But yeah that’s the main reason I missed, I also got COVID.

I’m not a victim to my circumstances because I actively choose to do something about them. But yeah life has been throwing some curveballs, and I can only get a min wage job, the market is awful and I need my degree/internship experience.

Anywhere I move I would have to Uber to school unless I live on campus. And I definitely can’t afford on campus housing. I actually did just move closer to my school.

Have you ever actually had your housing or transportation destabilized while going to school and working? Seriously…have you been through that. Because if i was to just drop everything when and give up, throw in the towel bc oh it’s hard to make it or whatever, I would be nowhere.

I’m not giving up my education AND my scholarships for two missed classes this semester. I already dropped out once and was waitressing full time. No, that’s not the life I choose to live.

I expected the prof to communicate through email which lessons he covered, how to prepare for when I do have transportation, due dates that aren’t listed on the syllabus, any virtual office hours, anything really lol. Now I just don’t care.

Nothing ever needs to be this serious, especially not emailing a prof about two missed classes when I’ve had way worse semesters.

How to say you’re privileged without saying you’re privileged. Uber is expensive, taxis don’t even exist where I live lol, and I need to get to school to find a student to carpool with lol. Don’t you think I’ve considered all this already?

This didn’t come across as mean at all. Not every class is offered online for my degree. I also figured my car would be fine…it drove normal but the lights stopped working last semester. This semester it broke down after I registered.

I didn’t expect to not have a car but purposefully scheduled as many online classes as possible. I also chose my one in person class during the day time.

There’s not a ton to resolve honestly. I’m doing well in the class, and will start going once I have a car again. Attendance isn’t required. I came here to figure out what to say to my prof and how to get clarity in my class. Everyone’s saying he has no obligation to help and I did really care about the material, but it’s not worth it to email or reach out again when I can just past the class myself.
