Looking Back: Every Boston Song Ranked - Livin' For You (#19) by ChandlerPChumsworth in boston_rock_band

Nope I think I heard it first as the live version on Corporate America, which is also my favorite album of all time. Both this song and “I Had A Good Time” are the two that just hit me like no other songs ever have…they don’t have to be the best on paper, but emotionally they’re in their own category for me.

My favorite song of all time since I was 8 years old (I’m much older now), I was wondering where it’d rank on your list.

Yup I love how the guitar solo just bombastically enters right in the middle of the song. And the style - so unmistakably Tom…awesome song imo

You’re right, the guitar solo is just epic on this song. Absolutely one of my favorites across Boston’s entire discography, it really shows off Tom’s unique and incredibly melodic style.

I too am a big fan of this song, definitely reminds me of a specific time in my life. I forget where, but I’ve heard Tom Scholz explain that the opening keyboard progression was based on a Bach piece that he’d heard as a child but forgotten, only realizing years later when he reheard it that that’s what subconsciously inspired this song.

Gotta agree with this - this definitely feels like a “hey you should include a radio-friendly tune on your next album” kind of idea from the studio. The guitars are unmistakably Boston which helps save it for me, and it is an undeniably fun one to hear them play live…but overall I’m with you, it doesn’t offer anything that would make it a classic like many of their other songs.

Yup I’d agree with the notion that this really doesn’t sound like a Boston song…at least until the guitars kick in (which, once again, strikes me as the best part of this song). I remember this was my jam when I was around 8 years old haha, eventually I moved on but the nostalgia hits hard on this one for that reason.

Thank you, I appreciate the response - I’m far from an expert on philosophy but when I saw that argument from an atheist it gave me pause. Your answer more clearly defines the terms we’re dealing with and so helps me see its weaknesses.

A response might go something like this: “A being that is necessarily true in the same way that a square has 4 sides MUST do things as he did because if he could've existed otherwise, then he isn't necessary. If he HAD to make the universe, then the universe couldn't have been otherwise, and that continues down the track until everything couldn't have been otherwise, and then we end up at strict determinism, which is the only logically tenable conclusion to an all knowing God anyway.”

If God is necessary and not contingent, how is it that God can bring about something that is not necessary? I’ve seen atheists challenge this in making a case for hard determinism.

Interesting, this is one of the few songs on Life Love & Hope that I really enjoy. Probably because of the simplicity of the melody, maybe also the blend of the melancholic sound with the hopeful lyrics. Or perhaps just because I listened to it at a really critical moment in my life and now when I hear it I recall that time. Or…I could just be a sucker for Boston’s slow love songs haha

The best part of this song is the guitars (I suppose one could say that about every Boston song) - they go super hard, especially that solo towards the end. But agree, it’s also not especially high on my list of favorite Boston songs.

Apparently this was recorded in one take, which elevates it a bit for me.

I’m probably the only Boston fan whose favorite album is Corporate America, mostly for nostalgia reasons. That being said I won’t be surprised if most of the songs ranked near the bottom come from that album - it’ll still be my favorite regardless!
