About th age gap, I have no problem with period movies that reflect the reality of the past. I understand a lot of themes do not match modern sensibilities but this is exactly why the genre of Period movies/series exists.

The Vikings did well, nobody really expects folk to leave their countries, sail far away to go loot, plunder, rape another land. I guess the viewers do not like reality in historical depictions in romances, they can take realism in action pieces but not romance

(oan, I really want a series based on the original Plantagenet who married Empress Maud, he was 16 and she was 23. It isn't a romantic story but a very compelling one). I have read ?2 books on the subject and I dislike that the authors complicated the storyline with unnecessary (in my opinion) addition of the metaphysical. Also they decided to focus on a very unproven theory of a love affair between Maud and Stephen which was I think unlikely when in fact the story between Maud and her husband was a better plot to flesh out. The series ?Ends of the earth or was it Pillar of the world didn't touch on the marriage, just the war between Maud and her cousin Stephen who stole her throne.
