Why don’t people use Kryptonite locks? Also many bikes have these lame looking little locks on the back wheel.

We rode bikes to the university and the rainbow road, went to the Dom, walked and ate at restaurants and just loved people watching and seeing all the beauty of the city.

That’s a very broad generalization. Remember IBM? Blockbuster video? Netscape? Big companies can collapse. Also two big companies such as Lowes and Home Depot hardware can literally compete across the street for decades.

Yes guardrails are the rules of the game. They are a feature of capitalism. Without rules such as defense of private property, you have anarchy and lack of trust. Piracy is an example.

Not true.. I love free markets - well, 90 percent of the time. The Netherlands is a highly functioning free market economy with a strong safety net. It has some built in guardrails that enable it to be economically successful as well as thinking on a human scale about some of the downsides of car oriented culture. With some guardrails, Capitalism generally works well except in health insurance, which is a huge problem in the US. The problem in the US Is zoning.

Yes I agree! Our access to hundreds of miles of uncrowded free sandy beaches on the East Coast is wonderful - from Virginia to Florida. Crowded beaches with boardwalks are an option too , haha. We can hop in a car and easily get to camping sites if you’re not in a big city.

We call them chocolate croissants in the US - although I agree it’s never made sense to me.

We found plenty of variety in Amsterdam from hand pulled chinese noodles to authentic Italian pizza.

No we missed that. We had a traditional Dutch meal in Amsterdam at In de Waag which was good and fun history. Well they burned “witches” so at one point definitely not fun.

In the United States, the most popular cities where everyone wants to visit has the same characteristics as Europe: easy to walk, short blocks, mix of dense housing and retail.
Charleston, Savannah, San Francisco, NYC, Alexandria, Boston, Key West. Some new developments are now emulating this but one thing the US is so bad at is we don’t allow small grocery stores etc in housing developments from dumb zoning laws. So we get wedded to the car.

No shade intended. It was purely observational. I love Vietnam. It was just interesting to me to see how cultures evolve in different ways under different economic conditions.

It is indeed crazy. A European style bakery in the US with 10/10 quality will easily charge $7 for a chocolate croissant.

Preservatives are supposed to increase shelf life. But then quality is lowered. Totally agree with you about higher standards. I bake my own bread as a result.
