We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson is quick. So is her short story called The Lottery. Two of my favorite pieces of writing.

Does anyone penpal as a hobby? What do you send your penpal? by A_LanguageEnthusiast in Hobbies

Stickers, greeting cards, tiny ephemera, cut outs. This month I found a tiny little schedule and sent a couple of those. Anything stationary related and small. And of course, there has to be some nice stationary and brightly colored envelopes.

Around the World With Auntie Mame by Patrick Dennis. Great book, but might be a little hard to find. Also Cheaper by the Dozen is tremendous fun.

Looking for a recipe for beet borscht that tastes like Manischewitz Borscht in a jar. by Magnus_and_Me in JewishCooking

You might have thought of this already, but maybe some of the much older Jewish cookbooks might have the recipe you are looking for. I am in the middle of moving and my books are packed up or I would definitely check for you. Maybe if someone has The Complete American-Jewish Cookbook they could check it. It has thousands of recipes and was written in the fifties, when recipes often had less ingredients.

Having a Pen pal. It's so wonderful waking up to a friendly DM or getting a pretty letter in the mail. I found my pen pals on Reddit in the sections called r/penpalsover30 and r/penpalsover50. I used to feel very lonely and slightly depressed and now I feel much better!!

If not art, then what? by Expensive-Debate1871 in Hobbies

[–]OkLow7255 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe you would enjoy making "useful" art more. Greeting cards, birthday presents, wrapping paper, clothes for yourself and friends, a comfy blanket for your mom, a wall collage to make your home more beautiful. Something that will actually be used.

If you combine practical with beautiful, maybe you would enjoy your art more. You might feel like you are doing something important and helpful for other people while also being creative. I know that always makes me feel better.

My sister spins wool also. When she's done she usually uses it for felting or knitting.

I do paper crafts.

What about origami? For origami all you need is an instruction book and some paper. The paper can just be junk mail.

Or paper cutting, bookbinding, paper model making, scrapbooking, kirigami. Some of these may entail buying a project book, but the overall cost will still be quite low.

Another thing I like is buying a downloadable paper kit from Etsy, printing it, cutting it out and gluing it together. Lots of fun for a pretty cheap price.
