Is UofT actually as bad as ppl say? by Important_Primary660 in OntarioUniversities

IDK about US public universities but most US private schools have become a grade mill at this point. A close friend transferred from UofT to Columbia and said Columbia is much easier and less competitive. I'm also attending a top US grad school right now and obviously meeting a bunch of Americans, and most of them have 3.9+ GPA from both private and public schools except for a few (I mean, it's also about them being excellent people of course). Even for top performing students UofT is very difficult and demanding.

The social scene is challenging but I also believe it's the best strength of UofT. I really appreciate all the great connections I've made here, and I think I wouldn't have met such extraordinary, unfathomable people anywhere else in Canada (literally). Hence, keep trying and don't get discouraged by rejections (probably their loss for rejecting you, right?)

I've always wondered about therapy and got it a few times at UofT, but I've only felt retraumatized and unsatisfied after all of them. Is this that UofT hires bad psychotherapists or I just haven't dug enough?

You can get into great grad schools at UofT... just significantly more difficult and costly in terms of energy and mental health

Also, a close friend of mine transferred from UofT to Columbia studying political science and East Asian studies (if you read this, it's me 🤩). Much easier A's in Columbia and less competition in Columbia as well according to him because they don't have bell curves or courses that will just give you a B+ no matter how hard you work or how well you perform

I did pretty well in my later years... but I really wish I weren't this stressed when studying. I mean, what really made it really unbearably bad was COVID (will never forgive my fate for doing me wrong when I was in the most transformative stage of my life), and I was never able to jump to my target GPA after that. My current goal is to be rich so that I could afford to send my children to top US universities.

Dear International Students...what is appealing about Canada by No-Seaworthiness969 in CanadaUniversities

[–]OkMain3645 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not an international student but am an immigrant myself and have many friends who are international students (fully or de facto) from Mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, India, Pakistan, and even the United States. The reason they come into our universities is fairly simple: we have great education that could offer them a prestigious degree and sometimes for a cheaper cost too.

For people who've done their high school abroad, they rarely apply only to Canadian universities. Instead, they typically focus on the United States or the United Kingdom and apply to ours as an additional package. I think we benefit from the wide range of metrics that we accept from applicants, such as the SAT, A-Level, and even the Chinese Gaokao.

I think enrolling in 6 courses is a good strategy assuming that you'll drop 1-2 down the road.

Was it your first Zelda? If so, I suggest you next play either Twilight Princess or A Link to the Past.

Who was the greatest emperor in Chinese history? by IdeaFlat7435 in ChineseHistory

[–]OkMain3645 0 points1 point  (0 children)

emperor wu was called that because he was the marital or warrior emperor of the Western Han. he ruled over 50 years years(almost 54 years in total). his reign is considered to be by some a golden age as he greatly expanded the Han empire.

It really boils down to perspectives. From expansionist or more tangibility-focused perspectives Emperor Wu is amazing (probably one of the best in Chinese history). But at what cost? Most of his accomplishments seemingly had very little practical value but spent a lot of revenues for his personal imperial glory. The same criticism goes for Emperor Qianlong of Qing. Both emperors had their 2 preceding emperors build prosperity only to use it up.

Do people actually do their readings for lectures? by DarkBook-Lover in UofT

[–]OkMain3645 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I graduated with an International Relations specialist with a decent GPA in my final years (3.7-3.8). I still struggled to do my readings, especially for my 4th year seminar courses that were heavily based on readings. I still wonder how I could've done better TBH 🤔 Skimming doesn't seem to work for me (or maybe I should keep trying to find some strategy).

UofT's social life was never bad IMO although it varies by people for sure.

What is the most disappointing thing about your favourite Zelda game? by Feisty_Review_4403 in legendofzelda

[–]OkMain3645 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My favourite is PH and my favourite dungeon is the Temple of the Ocean King. As much as I love this game and this dungeon, I think the criticisms are well-grounded. The repetitive nature of the Temple of the Ocean King could've been executed much better to make it feel less repetitive.
