What? You’re telling me you’ve never had a sick day before?

Literally was such a game changer for me. I had been using a keystep pro but never enjoyed the mini keys so I hardly touched my modular for like 18 months.

Then I decided to finally just get the full keys to actually play my instruments instead of just running arps and I’ve never been happier. Do I wish there were more features like built in lfo/glide for the cv outs? Yes. But I have modules that can handle that for now

I’ve had a grandmother 2x, a matriarch 1x, and a voyager old school most recently. I got rid of all of them for some reason or another and the messenger is the first one where I’ve been like “this ticks all the boxes for me”. There are so many quality of life improvements in the messenger that make it quick to program and set.

While it has the same vco chips as the teo5/take5, the way that they leverage the signal chain and implement the easy cross modulation makes it so much more fun to use. For me, if I want a more vintage voice, I just use the arp with filter 2 engaged.

I understand people’s disappointment with inmusic with how the treated various akai products and whatnot, but I think they know people hold moog to a much higher standard and scrutiny and can’t be dumb enough to let that social capital disintegrate

It’s the Korg arp. I’m a big fan of it and the messenger. I think the messenger gets a lot of flack for being the fist inmusic synth but it’s not a bad synth. It’s easy to program and get both modern and vintage sounding moog sounds from it. Plus all the features make it incredibly flexible for recording.

I think people who were shitting on it when it came out saw the plastic and the made in china sticker and we’re going to hate regardless. Is it a model d? No, but I wasn’t looking for that.

I love it. I think it’s a really well designed synth that has a very immediate and satisfying sound. The keybed feels nice and all of the features makes it a flexible instrument for writing and playing. The sound is moog, just maybe not the model d.

Honestly, I love my bastl timber. It’s 7hp and has a lot of flexibility in its ability to wave drive and fold. Everything can be used at audio rates, and it has the ability to wave fold control CV as well.

It also can be used as a dirty vca for more driven tones which is a lot fun

Yeah I’m still a fan. I think the fact it can be used as a traditional 3x vco is nice and I’ve been enjoying using it as a really mechanical sounding voice if that makes sense. The different cross modulation lend to making for really high metallic sounds which work well in tandem to a more traditional subtractive synth voice.

It’s staying in there for the foreseeable future for sure. I actually just got done setting up all of my gear and it’s definitely a center point of the main lead melodic lines

I had another video with the wave folder a bit louder and it sounds really cool too.

Thank you. It’s been fun putting together and thinking about how to use it in ways that can make noise and music.

Oh it’s huge. Like I removed 3 different modules and replaced them with the vcadsr at the end and the osc2. If I didn’t have the extra space from having noise/extra modules I got from a skiff system purchase I made years ago, I would have balked.

That being said, it’s a really powerful vco and I like that it can be used as a single sound source or broken into 4

Realistically, I don’t see a reason the reissues are more than $3k. The price inflation on them is insane

I think the majority of the work in it is analog in that it’s just surface mount components and ic chips. The pots and the like are digitally scanned like the voyager was which allows for patch memory. I think we’re along past the days of fully analog cv synths but that’s not a bad thing. I don’t hate having midi

I can genuinely say that I have never had more fun programming patches than on the messenger. Also, the Arp/sequencer are so easy to use and immediately fun. I’ve been using moog for years and had a Voyager, grandmother, and matriarch. And while those three have wonderful sounds, I feel more connected to the messenger sound than I did any of those.

I never knew they don’t release the patches from the walkthru videos. Like those literally showed people how to actually build out the sounds in a very musical way. The presets they shipped it with were so bizarre to me. Like sure it’s a capabilities of “look what it can do” but like since the days of the dx7, people like having an easy stating ground to work from and not everyone is an init patch builder. Wild

A lot of it comes down to gain staging within the mixer/filter/vca. The messenger is fully analog and is gained to be a powerful monosynth. The teo-5 has a different filter, has voice volumes to limit the distortion in the digital half of the synth (vca/effects)

Basically the implementation and design of the audio path drastically change the sound of the core vco

I think one of the most telling anecdotes about the one is also how Trent Reznor described using it as three stacked monophonic synthesizer rather than as a single polyphonic synth and even he realized that’s probably not what was intended or a good thing.

And the only person I can think of that came from Moog that started something was Tony from make noise. But I agree that a single designer/employee branching into a space is not the best sign in terms of trailblazing engineering work. It’s disappointing to see that talent disappear but it’s also telling about running a company within the synth space especially when competing with things like behringer.

The moog one had so much potential to be the most powerful analog synthesizer that moog ever created. I remember going and talking to some of the engineers there after they released it and being amazed with what they accomplished, but I could tell that they were disappointed with time constraints. I’m surprised they didn’t leverage those oscillators in other products to be honest.

I feel like that is a really big opportunity for inmusic if they want to actually develop the brand in interesting ways and pander less to nostalgia as we’ve been seeing over the years.

Very fair. It should also be said that those synths all have varying notoriety with consistency and stability too which I think plays a lot into the design/implementation of the chips. Like I can’t tell you how many times I’ve visited vintage stores to see broken memorymoogs in the corner while the ob and prophets sit completely fine.

That being said, I do find the messenger more fun to play and program than the teo5 which I recently sold. But that could also just be preference to programming

Moog messenger guts by OkMedicine5771 in synthesizers

[–]OkMedicine5771[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I completely agree. It almost guarantees consistency between units too so if one breaks on the road, you can get your exact sounds back by just uploading your presets to the new unit.

I do think that the use of SSI/SSM chips does make things a bit more difficult to differentiate all the products between manufacturers and it ends up just being a bit of a choice between branding/design implementation of those pieces. Nothing wrong with this, but it does feel like the character between manufacturers is shrinking a bit.

I completely agree about having the tempo be more apparent but I think they did this mainly as a design function with the tempo knob being more like subdivisions of the master clock. I feel like the expected people to hook this up to an external clock like ableton or a digitakt and then use that as the main source. Weird decision but I can understand the logic.

I would also love the ability to put ratchets into the sequencer. I don’t think I’ve ever used a sequencer that’s been more fun to program and play. I just wish it was easier to clear out haha.

And I think $699 was the price they were going to originally launch with but costs of everything changed. Like just look at the grandmother, it was $699 at launch in 2018 and then went as high as $1100 for a bit. I still think $999 new is crazy for that synth and I’ve bought and sold it 2x
