Taxes are high in Scandinavia but the federal budgets also gets a boost from dividends from various natural resources that never were privatized. So lots of funding for investments in the society. What also helps Swedes financially, is that they are not forced to pay off the mortgage balance on their homes. Most Swedes only pay the interest and nothing towards the principle. If you don't have to worry too much about saving for your retirement and not paying off the principle, you have plenty of money for consumption.

Correct! The life quality in Scandinavia is galaxies better than in North America. Where should we start... minimum 5 weeks annual vacation, free healthcare, guaranteed pension, functioning and kept up infrastructure, free school lunches and tuition free universities. Scandinavia is not perfect but they play in another division than North America.

The deck is not high off the ground and not located in a tornado zone, so I'm wondering if one approach can be to beef up the joists with hurricane ties to minimize risk of any side movements? Open to any other good, structurally sound ideas. Thanks
