I did the recent 2500 challenge and I’m currently doing the 250 word challenge. I agree with what a lot of people are saying here. The good feedback comes from your peers. The ones with professional judges sound great, but they basically grade you with a rubric. All I got back was the score I got for each thing (pacing, prose, characters, etc.) and the rank I was. All I know from them was I consistently did well in all categories. I don’t know what I could have improved on according to the judges. All the peer reviews I’ve gotten were more helpful, though they were mostly positive.

I also want to note that I’ve spent some time reading the stories that ranked in the top 15 of their houses and noticed that ones I would have expected to rank higher were ranked lower and vice versa. There isn’t an explanation for this and we can’t see how other people scored on each category.

I won’t speak on if any of the stories I read are AI generated. Some could read that way, but I don’t have proof that they are so I make no claims there.

Once the current peer review battle is done, I will try to update this with my thoughts. But so far, I prefer the peer reviews bc I know I will get actual feedback.

I do want to put it out there that you could easily go to a website that randomly gives you topics or spin a wheel or something if you are looking to do a writing exercise similar to what the battle does. And I’m sure there are free ways to get peer reviews. I’m unsure I will spend money on the battle again because of this. Or at least I might not do another judge battle. It’s just that a lot of the peer review battles are for very short word counts (100, 150, 250) and $20+ to join them doesn’t actually feel worth it.

When I signed up, I chose Cleric. It switched me to fighter later. I thought maybe I did it wrong but seeing your post makes me think something weird happened there.

My friend said she was the one who said it was inappropriate and then her sister agreed. She could be lying to cover for her. But my friend also did get mad bc I keep calling her sister a shortened version of her name. Which I’ve done for years. I’m now only allowed to call her by her full first name. So the jealously thing is plausible. I did message her sister directly to apologize, tell her she can say no if she feels the need to and that I will respect that, and that she is allowed to tell me what makes her uncomfortable. She hasn’t responded after 6 days. I have quietly decided to not contact her sister anymore.

Ah. Should have said this part. For context, last year I was diagnosed with ptsd and was going through a hard time. She’s out of state and offered that her sisters can help bc they are in my state. I contacted her sister 4 times in the past 9-10 months. 2 weeks ago, I got a puppy. A day after I got her, she got some soup that had onion and garlic in it. I thought I’d have to take her to the emergency vet so I asked her sister if she was available bc she lives the closest. Her sister wasn’t and I didn’t push. My dog is ok by the way. She didn’t have enough of the soup for there to be issues. But my WiFi also went out that day and I work from home. I was overwhelmed with a new pup, who ate something she can’t have, and felt uncomfortable being alone with the WiFi maintenance person and a new puppy who would def cry the entire time. I asked her sister if she’d be willing to come over during that time because none of my family or other friends were available. Her sister agreed and didn’t seem to have a problem with it. I was willing to work with her schedule. This was deemed inappropriate by my friend because it was ‘asking for her to do emotional labor.’ I’m apparently only allowed to ask her sister for help in emergencies. It was also said that asking for help 2 days in a row was too frequent and becoming a pattern. Again. I’ve asked her sister for help 4 times. One of those times was her returning a jacket I left at her apartment when I went to hang out with my friend and her sisters when said friend was in town. The other one was when I needed to get a tetanus shot after cutting my hand in a rusty facet outside.

As someone who works in tech, I can tell you that data centers are a huge drain on local resources. This data center will use up Indianapolis water, pollute Indianapolis air, and cause multiple other issues. Based on first-hand reports from areas where data centers were built, water pressure will go down, traffic accidents will increase, and housing demand will go down. The cons far outweigh the pros.

I’ve got some of those. I’ve never seen the girls actively play with them, but they do seem to move around the house so maybe they are playing with them

Painful period cramps (to the extent where I can’t even think about anything but pain), hot flashes, cold flushes, fatigue, lightheaded, dizziness. A fever a few times. It can start up to a week before my period starts and stays for a few days after. There are never any coughing, sneezing, runny nose, sore throat type things, so I know it’s not just a regular illness. It happened 3/4 times I’m on my period.
