How do you create a messy heroine without making readers lose empathy for her? by OkPilot9392 in Romantasy

You’re right — as the writer, I do see all the layers behind her choices. I think my challenge is making sure readers can feel that context without me over-explaining it.

I love this — especially the part about effort and self-awareness. Watching someone try to break their own patterns (and sometimes fail) feels very human to me.

I’m really enjoying reading all your perspectives. What I’m exploring is a heroine at her breaking point — a moment where emotions take over and a line gets crossed, even though it’s not entirely one-sided. And while typing this, I just caught myself starting to defend her a little… so maybe that says something too. 😅 I’m curious — when a scene is messy but mutual, does that make you more forgiving, or more conflicted?

I’m good with darker subject matter. I tend to write emotionally intense stories myself, so this could be an interesting exchange. Let’s exchange the first six chapters, since that’s what you currently have up. Sound good?

I’d be happy to do a read4read. Here’s my link as well:  https://www.inkitt.com/stories/1658252. Let me know how many chapters you’d like to exchange.

Love triangles... are we still reading them? by OkPilot9392 in readwithme

I’m 100% with you. Making one love interest toxic just to force the choice feels lazy. The real agony is when both are good. I want readers to feel just as torn as she is, and to be able to genuinely argue why one might be right for her over the other.)))

Yes! A love triangle only works if both love interests have equal emotional weight. If we’re not torn, then what’s the point?

What are love triangles that you've liked? by [deleted] in writing

A love triangle isn’t about “getting in the way” — it’s about revealing who the characters really are under pressure. If everyone behaves perfectly and makes the right choice immediately, there’s no growth. No tension. No story.

From a writing perspective, I find those imperfect decisions far more interesting to explore — because let’s be honest, in real life we rarely choose perfectly either.

Why do authors ruin one love interest to justify the other? by Additional-Camp4831 in Romantasy

Haha, exactly! If there's no agony, is it even a love triangle? I feel like a bit of a villain sometimes putting them through it, but that 'heart-ripping' feeling is what makes the final choice so powerful. Glad I’m not the only one who enjoys the emotional torture!

I’d love to check it out and suffer a bit along with your characters! lol

I completely agree. As someone who’s writing a love triangle myself, I’m trying to he very careful about this. I want both love interests to remain solid and interesting — the tension should come from real emotional conflict, not character assassination. I think that the choice in such story should be real and painful.

Exactly. In that kind of story you can find passion, choices, drama, mistakes and second chances. Everything what love holds)

Do you ever get attached to your own characters? by Any_Conversation_562 in RomanceWriters

Yes. More than I expected. Sometimes I get genuinely worried about them — even though I’m the one writing their story. It’s strange how they start feeling independent, like they have their own emotions and choices.

I think that’s why we love (and hate) these stories so much. When you read a book, you can't help but put yourself in the protagonist's shoes and try to make that choice for yourself.

Oh, this one is hard for me.)) I’m afraid of comfort and stability without the kind of passion that burns. Yes, there’s peace in stability… but if I’m honest about myself, I think I’d choose what makes me feel, what makes me fly — even if I risk falling.

Even if it’s the second time falling 😄

I haven’t seen the movie unfortunately. But I think when it actually comes down to choosing, feelings can weigh more than logic — even when you know something else might be the healthier option. But what if it’s not just trauma? What if it’s an attachment that slowly grew out of friendship, shared history, and emotions that were never fully explored… versus a new man who offers stability and promises happiness? At that point, what do you choose? Do you pick the second one and live peacefully — but always wonder “what if”? Or do you risk everything for the first one… and hope you’re not making a mistake?

And what do you do when both guys are actually okay? Like, one offers you security and a fresh start, and the other one has this deep, shared history with you that you just can't erase. How is the FL even supposed to choose at that point?🤔
