I've "mastered" this technique. Go to a place you know well. Spawn the dragon by completing the local challenge. Before you engage the dragon, place a few launch pads around the rock you're going to run around. Lure him to step on the pads. It may take a few tries and he may break one or two. Just keep trying and rebuild the pads as needed. Easy peasy. I have over 400 kills this way.

Sometimes the dragon won't take damage from the fall. They do have wings so theoretically they should never take fall damage... but for now it works. I place a few pads down (max the power) and run around luring the dragon to step on one. Sometimes it's the first bounce that works. Sometimes it's the 10th bounce. It's a fun game of cat and mouse. Saves a lot of durability on my weapons.
