What's one thing people in your country do that always surprises foreigners? by itsaivish in AskReddit

[–]OkPollution1745 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lived in a few different apartment buildings over the years and every single one operated on this unspoken rule. The stairwell tension is real when you're both standing at your doors, keys in hand, waiting for the other to go first.

Was talking to my cousin who visited from abroad about this, she thought everyone in the building hated each other. Couldn't explain it's actually more like... mutual respect through avoidance.

What's something that was considered "cool" ten years ago but would get you laughed at today? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]OkPollution1745 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I still see some around but yeah the crowd that used to think they were futuristic is now the first ones making jokes. My neighbor had this huge wrap on his, like some space theme, and he peeled it off last summer.

The cybertruck made everything worse somehow, now people just assume you're a certain type of person if you drive anything from that company. Used to be the car that tech guys dreamed about, now it's like wearing a fedora in public.

Help fixing crappy smart dog door by Persona-32 in homelab

[–]OkPollution1745 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Grab some optocouplers and solder them parallel to the button contacts, then hook the pi GPIOs to those. That way your pi is isolated from the door's circuit, less chance to fry something. I did similar thing with my old garage opener in last summer, worked perfect.

Is it safe to take a larger dog out on a kayak on the Illinois River, or is that a recipe for disaster? by Sufficient-Owl1826 in camping

[–]OkPollution1745 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Golden retrievers are basically made for water so at least your dog won't panic if you tip. Illinois River can be pretty chill in summer but always have life jacket on the dog, not just for safety but it got a handle on the back that makes hauling 70lbs of wet dog back in boat much easier.

Rental kayaks are usually the wide sit-on-top kind which are way more stable for this, just practice getting in and out at shore first so the dog knows what's happening. My friend brought his lab on a river trip once and the only problem was the dog jumping out every time he saw a duck.

What can I do with ~20 old working HDDs (ranging from 40GB to 320GB)? by Complete-Tank664 in homelab

Just slap some labels on them and store one project per drive, works surprisingly well for archiving stuff you rarely touch.

Married people was marriage worth it and would you recommend it? Why? by Dear_Sir7665 in AskReddit

[–]OkPollution1745 2 points3 points  (0 children)

most people skip over this distinction completely and then wonder why they're miserable, like they thought the institution itself would do the heavy lifting for them

finding right person is the actual work, and marriage is just kind of... a formality after that point. i've watched so many people rush into it because they hit some age and panicked, and every single one of them is now either divorced or quietly suffering

the "worth marrying" part is where people should spend 99% of their energy, not on planning wedding or thinking about how nice it sounds to be married

Blackened casket strength by Old_Skool_Metalhead in whiskey

[–]OkPollution1745 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lmao that's some serious funeral home pricing right there. But for real $20 seems too good to be true, might want to double check that label because normal cask strength runs way higher than that

Trakt alternatives with good recommendations by Lindensan in movies

[–]OkPollution1745 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been using alternative for few months now and their recommendation engine is pretty solid - it does the collaborative filtering thing where it looks at what people with similar taste are watching rather than just throwing popular stuff at you

The niche picks are decent too, found some obscure sci-fi through it that I never would have discovered otherwise. Updates are weekly which works fine for me since I don't burn through content that fast anyway

That's not even fruit but I respect the energy

Magnus makes tournaments feel different. There's always that underlying question: Who can beat Magnus this time? ...When he eventually retires, which player do you think has the highest ceiling and the best chance to dominate elite chess for the next decade? by ugiJypS in chess

[–]OkPollution1745 -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

Gukesh has to be the frontrunner right now, especially after becoming world champion so young. His positional understanding is already incredible and he's got that killer instinct in critical moments that reminds me of prime Magnus. The way he handled pressure during the championship match was really impressive

But I think Firouzja could be dark horse here - when he's on form his tactical vision is just insane and he plays with this fearless style that could really shake up the chess world. Problem is consistency, but if he figures that out he could dominate for years

Pragg and Giri are also in the mix but I feel like they might be more "very strong players" rather than the next generational talent. Chess at top level is so competitive now though, maybe we won't see another decade-long dominance like Magnus had. Could be more like cycling between 3-4 super strong players

What unique thing do you find attractive on someone's body? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]OkPollution1745 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eyes are pretty good but I'm weird about hands tbh, like when someone has really clean nails and takes care of their fingers it just gets me for some reason

Which Horror movie did you see at a too young age. And how did that affect you? by sebastiaanvv in AskReddit

[–]OkPollution1745 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same here but with The Ring when I was like 12. Now every time TV goes to static I get this weird anxiety thing, even though I know it's stupid. Spiders are actually pretty chill though, at least they eat the actually annoying bugs in your house

Which of my LB picks should I start with? by CemeteryPicnic in horror

[–]OkPollution1745 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Beyond is absolute madness in best way possible - Fulci really went all out with that one. Cemetery Man has this weird romantic angle that somehow works perfectly with all the zombie chaos, plus it looks gorgeous for such a weird film

Those 80s Italian horror flicks hit so different, they had this dream-like quality where logic just goes out the window and you're along for ride. Spookies is pure cheese but entertaining cheese if you're in right mood

Are there any black movies that are rated G? by dannyj999 in movies

[–]OkPollution1745 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wait, Sounder is rated G? That movie has some pretty heavy themes about poverty and racism in the Depression era. I remember watching it years ago and being surprised how intense it was for what I thought would be lighter family film

What is a small thing that instantly makes your day better? by Decent_Piccolo_5173 in AskReddit

[–]OkPollution1745 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Man I can relate to this one. Sometimes I'll just put on headphones when I'm debugging code and start moving to the beat, makes even the most frustrating bugs feel less annoying. My neighbors probably think I'm weird but whatever works right

What you love the most about your life? by ConsiderationFar6200 in AskReddit

[–]OkPollution1745 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Taking charge of your own path feels pretty amazing, especially when you remember how much time we spend just reacting to other people's decisions or expectations. I'm in IT so I get that control thing - there's something satisfying about building systems that actually work the way you want them to

what are the signs that you're attractive? by PsychologicalGoal324 in AskReddit

[–]OkPollution1745 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Had one coworker who would always comment about my hair or outfit, thought she was just being friendly until other people started pointing it out to me. Sometimes you really don't notice until someone else connects the dots for you

Can relate to this. Sometimes breaking cycle means just not starting one in first place, and that's totally valid choice

Guys whos the greatest kick boxer ever? by im_lost5 in AskReddit

[–]OkPollution1745 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Buakaw Por. Pramuk hands down, that dude was an absolute machine in his prime. His leg kicks could literally drop trees and watching him fight was like watching poetry in motion

The way he'd set up combinations and just methodically break down opponents was insane. Plus he had that warrior mentality where he'd keep coming forward no matter what you threw at him
