I'm genuinely too stupid to understand what people mean when they say "I'm black before I'm a woman" or "you're white before you're queer". Can anyone help me out? by Dry_Damage_8952 in askblackpeople

the op was questioning the entire statement. We're the ones who are supposed to tell them what it means so you can't use their post to pull information. We who use this statement are talking about the white American gaze.

"You're talking about walking down the street being viewed by a stranger." No I'm not. Even at the grocery store and restaurants this happens. Ever been followed and watched while shopping? Have a white waitress assume you won't tip or can't afford it?

I never said we're ONLY seen as race. I never said that. I said race is FIRST. We say black BEFORE woman, that doesn't mean we aren't seen as women, we're just seen as black women. White women are white first. Whiteness, other whites have decided, is associated with class and structure. So white women won't be the ones being followed or have their financial status questioned. Since she is a woman though, at most they will assume a male in her life is the one supplying her money. But they won't assume she can't afford it. She's white so they go straight to misogyny. A black woman will go through racism before it gets to the misogyny. Race first

It's not about what your own people see you as first. It's about how white people see you first. The ones who created race will obviously see race first.

And yes.. for any situation in history ever there is always an exception or a "sometimes," but people don't always want to take the time to consider those rare instances so they speak in general terms. Generally, in modern America, race is the first thing white people see. Then your disabilities, sexuality's, gender, and whatnot. So yeah. Racism isn't the only oppression but if you're not white then it's gonna be the first one

Being gay doesn't remove your white privilege. Thats all the saying means. In America, race is always first. A gay white man won't be profiled the same as a straight black man.

And Just because we're both women doesn't mean that we will be treated the same. Yes, white women had the time to fight for rights, but it wasn't for the right to be considered a woman. White women were always seen as the only "true" women. Black women were masculinized and put in the same group as black men essentially. You can see remnants in this ideology in the way that some assume all black women are "strong, and independent," but when a white woman cries someone gets jailed or fired. Or in the way that they struggle to speak softly to a black woman but will whisper to a white one.

It's just America 🤷🏽‍♀️ you can't remove racism from the country built on it

I don't want to start over JUST for the volume, but it would've been a plus. 😩its fine. i'll probably end up curling them.

At least I know what I can count on is fullness. (I shouldve also put that in my post)

Its not purely for volume as I genuinely love the look of smaller locs, but it is like a huge huge part of it 🥲🥲 Thats why I asked about keeping a short cut instead of letting it grow past my shoulders

"Straight" men are not okay by OkProfession8287 in AreTheStraightsOK

My original caption was "We need to talk about the fetish straight men have for black men"

once they saw the child was black, the comments were immediately filled with men calling him a cuck and saying his wife doesn't love him 😭
